we spent days scouting prior to the hunt and had not seen any mature bucks, on the opening evening of the hunt we sat up glassing and i saw half of his antler sticking out of the oak brush, he was bedded down. we waited him out to stand and let us get a better look at him, he finaly stood and started browsing still not giving us a great look, after 10 min. or so he came back and bedded back down in the same bed except facing us, and thats when i could see he had extras, still did not have a shot, we waited for another 10-15 min. and another hunter was hiking up the ridge he was on unaware we were looking at the buck, and was to thick for him to see anyway, the buck stood when the hunter had gotten about 150-200 yards from him, but the buck did not move and the hunter sidehilled away from the buck, and i decided to take the shot now or the buck may try to sneek the other direction from the hunter, shooting a steep downhill 314 yards i let the 300 rip, it all seemed to happen fast but i was very happy to walk up to him and get a close up, the other hunter walked up just as i was taking my pack off, he is my biggest buck to date and i am very pleased with him, we quartered him up and packed him out in the dark, lucky for us he died 10 feet of a trail, thanks to my buddy for the help and an even bigger thanks to my wife for letting me go and do what i love.
