I was finally drawn for my first mulie tag this year. I spent most of the archery and muzzleloader season trying to find a big buck, but I came up empty in all of my normal areas. Every large buck that I had seen during whitetail season last year seemed to have disappeared.

Finally on the third day of rifle season I checked out a spot I hadn't hunted in years and saw 3 good bucks that evening, including a big non-typical. I hunted this area for the full season but only the smallest of the 3 would show (giving me a good broadside shot every time.)

I decided on the last evening to go back and hope that any of the 3 would show up and give me a shot. At about 5, I saw his antlers sticking up over a hill. I did a quick sneak using a big hill for cover and crawled to the top. I watched him for about 5 minutes as he was walking broadside at 280 and slowly getting closer. At 250 I decided I would take him. The first shot hit good and he stood there getting wobbly. A second shot and he was down.

He was the middle sized buck of the 3 but now I think the one I had within range every other day may have been bigger. Some quick and rough measurements put his gross score right around 170". All in all, I am happy with him for my first mulie.
