Deployed in Afghanistan but planning for 2012

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan and really love this forum because it allows me to live vicariously through all of you and your hunts! I'm working on planning a muley/whitetail hunt or cow elk hunt that me and my 9 year old son Nathan can go on. It's been hard on him since this is my second deployment and now I've been gone the last 9 months and thought it would be great to start planning a hunting trip for him and me. He can look at maps and gear and we would have something to talk about until I'm home in March.

So I will get to the point. I've hunted CO, WY, SD, ND and I'm looking for a descent hunt preferably on private property so we can have a great experience and not bumping into a lot of people. I'm a soldier, not a millionaire so if you know of a good reasonable outfit I can start arranging a hunt that would be great. Looking for something where I can take him along, he won't be hunting but coming along and doesn't mind a reasonably challenging hunt..

If you can point me in the right direction so I can start the process that would be great. I'm not looking for free, I'm willing to pay.. But like I said, I'm on a budget...

Thanks,
Chip Rankin

LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-11 AT 07:46AM (MST)[p]Thank you for your service. Tell all those over there with you, that you are greatly appreciated and you are all in our prayers. Also, thanks for being a great Dad. I hope all goes well and you can soon be home with your family. I don't know much about private property hunts, but I bet you will get a bunch of information and offers. I bet you would be welcome in about any elk camp, and there will be some who offer to have you and your son as part of their group. Being a teacher, I'm only able to be a weekend hunter for the most part, so I couldn't do you justice. You might want to narrow down your search area so those people in that area will perk up and realize they can help you. Good luck and God's blessings to all of you.

Our family wants to say, thank you! Happy Thanks Giving!
I would look at Wyoming, Wyoming has a lot to offer as far as taking your son out to hunt. I don't know what the age limit is there to hunt that state but if you time it right you can hunt Antelope after everyone else is out hunting deer. There are ranches that will let you hunt at a reasonable price too. Good luck :)

They run the Morgan Creek Ranch. The Massey family run this place an are very accommidating. You'll see plenty of animals. Worth a look see. Good luck in your quest and God Bless you and you family for your service to this great country of ours.

Hope you can find something. thanks for serving our country and happy thanksgiving

What state are you a resident of? If you are from CO, then you can hunt in a Ranching for Wildlife area. Those are generally better than a standard unit.

Thank you for your service.

This thanksgiving weekend me and my son will be doing some quack blasting. You please be sure to tell the fellas your with THANK YOU for making this possible in this country. Great to live in a country where we can pack a gun, and not to protect my life, but for enjoyment. God bless you guys!!

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!

Chip, first of all, THANK YOU for your service to our country. It is only because of good men and women such as yourself that the rest of us are able to live our lives in freedom as we do, and we should never forget that.

Now, to your question about hunting. I can't help you with a big game hunt such as others have done, but here is an open invitation to you and your son to come duck hunting here in California, on one of the better private clubs in the state. I've had the good fortune to be a partner in a good property in one of the state's most revered waterfowl hunting areas, the Butte Sink, for the last 35 years. Over that time, I've taken many youth on their first duck hunt, so I love taking kids.

It would be my honor to take you and your son next season if you'd like to come duck hunting in California. We'd customize the trip to suit your tastes, and can include pheasant or fall turkey with the duck hunting, possibly some salmon and/or steelhead fishing too. We've got a comfortable house on the property, and the hunting is not strenuous at all. You can check with Fishlakeelkhunter or Eelgrass on here for details about the hunting. Both have been my guest in the blind and I expect to take both of them again this year.

Taking you and your son would be a very small way of giving back to someone who has given so much, so consider this an open offer.

Fellas,

Thanks for all the nice comments! We too had a Thanksgiving spread, where I work it's filled with NATO members so they were surprised to what Thanksgiving involved, I think a number of them want to adopt this Holiday in their country also...

To make things easier, if you have some tips/advice I posted my e-mail address below. I live in MN so the Dakota's are close and Montana and WY are not too far. I elk hunt near Meeker, CO but that's archery and a little difficult to bring my son with.

Have a great Holiday season and thanks again!
Chip
