First day saw some average to below average bucks, and spent some time learning the area. Second day brought alot of walking and learning where I really didn't want to expend any effort in returning to hunt there. Day 3 to me back to the original area hunted on the first day, saw a couple 170" framed bucks, one had great backs and crab claw fronts, the other had the opposite, great fronts and terrible backs, two tags, a hacksaw and some super glue and I could have made one hell of a buck between the two! spotting scope photo of the buck with good backs.

That evening i was glassing a couple does and a below average 4 point feeding in a small saddle when out of the corner of my eye I saw the shape of a mule deer rack frame right next to a large mahogany bush above a ledge. I wrote it off as a bush, too large and I'm not lucky enough for it to be a deer. Gave it a minute and glanced at it a little harder, still dismissed it as an all to familiar bush that i had seen and double checked several times throughout the day in different places. Just to humor myself at the large bush i was looking at I threw the glass up on it, I got the shakes when I saw what I expected to be a bush looking back at me.
After my initial reaction, I sarted picking the buck apart and talking myself out of shooting him, comparing ears to forks, beams, etc. I decided that he needed to stand up so I could see how everything proportioned. A few minutes later he did, stretched his back, and wiggled his tail, I decided he was worth missing whatever opportunity colder weather and the rut might bring and sent a 300gr Berger out of my 338 Edge high through his shoulder at 190 yards. Went in the next moring with a friends help to retrieve him. Got pics taken and congratulations said and headed to a friends taxidermy shop to get an accurate official score from a B&C measurer. He goes 188 even. I started this hunt with over zealous hopes of 190 or better, two inches off of that mark at 188 is extremely satisfying, and I feel very fortunate for what I got, it's not an easy hunt or terrain, and I did alot of homework before the season opened.

Scored him with two different people, 188 was the official scorers number, taxidermist that is mounting him got 188 5/8. Since theres really no trash to add up, its pretty much a 190 inch frame... I'd rather have the more impressive frame than 20 inches of trash to drive up the number. Not any trick photography here, not sitting way back by his rear end, his head is resting on my knee in one, and i don't have him pushed out as far away from me as i can get him in the others, photos are pretty accurate as to what he is. I also think alot of people lie about score ha ha! But thank you, he's not as big as some ofthe bucks on here for sure, but he's mine and I like him!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-11 AT 10:14AM (MST)[p]He does "look" bigger than 188 to me too. I can see how you guys came up with that score though. He's got everything in proportion. I keep coming back to this post just to look at it! I shot a buck this year that grosses 185, and this buck is WAY better than mine. Even though the scores are not that far off, they are two completely different classes of bucks. My buck has a 175ish frame with just one big inline to bump him up to 185. He really isn't that type of buck. Again, congratulations on a beautiful buck!

Excellent job and you should have no regrets. Looks like your research and efforts paid off nicely. Probably in the top few percent of bucks harvested in the West.

FWP will probably send you an envelope to send a tooth in for aging. If you'd be so gracious, let us know what he ages at. I'm guessing 5. Just a guess for fun.

Outstanding buck! You could get it scored here on MM and you would have a new MT state record, might want to reconsider...

Thanks for sharing. There is just something about that buck - whatever the score might be. One of the prettiest I have seen. Congratulations!

well i must say that buck looks a bit bigger( not that a 188 4 pt is not a monster. It just looks bigger. if you wouldnt mind posting up the score sheet. I am just curious as to what everything measured.

I lovde that buck i would not have hesitated to shoot him.

That is an AWESOME buck, Congrats!

I LOVE it when a pic is posted and a score given and the only disagreement is "I don't think your high enough did you forget to add something",haha.

I agree he looks bigger, but that is just the way it is sometimes which is why so many here say score does not matter.

Look out Forkie, FTW is watching us!

Holy SH!T, with all the other posts of people complaining around here I missed this on until now..........
