So they helicoptered my old friend "catch 22" down last Jan and whacked off his horns and gave him a shiny new necklace. That's the bad news... the good news he survived their stupidity and seems to be getting enough chow down past the restriction to still grow some stuff on top of his head. Last night he was on the skyline with the sunset behind him and it was just simply magnificent- although too dark for any pics with my set-up.

Sorry for all the redundant pics but I was excited and clicking as fast as my little finger could push the button!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-11 AT 08:17AM (MST)[p]Restriction?? Give me a break. Looks like the buck is thriving. Exactly the opposite proof your off-base reaction is intended to evoke. Sorry, I fail to say ANY bad news here. Looks like when they "whacked off his horns" they probably prevented some idiot from chasing him around the hills throughout the most sensitive time of the winter like a salivating wolf waiting for his ANTLERS to drop so they could go scoop them up and/or kept him from being poached. Add to that one year of solid mule deer data and I say it was a smashing success.

Great buck.

HOOK 'EM!

probably saved him from getting poached, I heard two idiots whacked one in town here a month ago or so.

Doesn't look like the stress from the capture affected him one bit judging from what he grew this year. That is a sweet buck. Wish I could have found one like that to cap my season off. Maybe next year.

Or prevented him from getting ratted out by a winter range bounty hunter?

The deer run away regardless of whether someone is chasing them around waiting for them to drop their horns or trying to get a photograph. Any disturbance in their winter range will effect them, but they are prey animals, so they will always be running from something, especially when the wolves get a little thicker in that area.

I could not even tell he had a collar on; must be on there pretty tight, but you can't argue with that rack. These deer you photograph must be in a limited entry or no entry area during hunting season. A buck like that would have about a 1% chance of surviving the season where I hunt (I would not be the only person after him).

Looks like this deer got thumped by the last Gov. tag holder. I could be wrong.....but it looks like the same buck. Someone should have the picture in MM land.

Well, well, well....looks like the old boy didn't "survive the stupidity" after all.

Killing that deer must have been a proud moment...

Ring, ring ring..."hello"

Yeah, we found you a buck.

"is he big?"

Yeah. When can you get here to shoot him?

"how big? I am laying on the couch, and right in the middle of watching Porkys, relaxing in my Snuggie"

Well, call us when the movie is over.

"think he will still be there?"

Probably, he is down on the winter range, doesn't seem too concerned. Some dufus was taking his pics to post on the net, and he just stood there. He might be retarded or something.

"ok, but he better be big, Porkys II is on afterwards."

I'm willing to bet "The Snuggie Buck" will not be on the plaque in front of the shoulder mount at the Salt Lake show. Will be some real studly name in honor of the tough hunt.

I know a guy down at the flea market who has an airbrush. I am going to see if I can get Snuggie air-brushed on some t-shirts, so they can sell them in the parking lot at the SLC show.

Think I'll get a finder's fee?

That would be freaking wicked sweet. Maybe a natural chase scene depicting the life and death struggles of a trophy Mule Deer. Would you paint Snuggie getting chased by a:

1.Helicopter
2.Mountain Lion
3.Squirrel
4.A geriatric ward
5.A pack of soulless bounty hunters

Hell, maybe make them all.

Soooo, the best buck they could find had a freakin' collar on it??? How much money did it cost the F&G to only get a year's worth of data from that buck? Kinda goes against what these tags are 'susposed' to be for, "the betterment of mule deer", by shooting one that would have provided some real good data over the years. How much the tag sold for minus the cost of capturing it and collaring it = one pathetic leap for mankind.

Amen brotha!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell you are not from Utah BCBoy, you do not understand the kill at ALL cost mentality.

Uturds killing Colorado study deer.................FAIL.

How many of these gov. Tag bucks has this guy killed and why the puck would he want to keep doing it? I cannot imagine it is very rewarding after the first couple. I mean I strive to kill the best buck I can find in an area I'm hunting and a better one the next time and the next, it doesn't always work out but that is at least part of the goal and the joy is in being the one to find it myself.

I suppose if I was rich and inclined I may do it once, but I doubt even that. I have no desire to even go on a guided hunt let alone a guided hunt on winter range on a tag that is statewide with no other hunters and people looking for me asking for finder fees, etc.,etc.,etc......

It's a real nice buck but it isn't even a gagger type that is worth that amount of money and negative press attached to these things. Not that a big enough buck makes it any better but ....

Make no mistake I would shoot that buck on any tag I will most likely ever have, but just doesn't seem like a gov. Tag type buck especially for someone who has had umpteen of them. I think it's time for him to actually hunt a deer for a change. Please be sure to tell me if I have the wrong idea about how he hunts or killed this buck and I will gladly apologize for my statement.

Bill

Kill the buck that makes YOU happy!

The worst part of this is.....now moss back and company have squirrels pisscutter honeyholes.. be prepared for an onslaught and Blocked roads etc.....

thats the biggest buck they could find in colorado? Its a big buck but not that big. ill bet squirrel got a nice finders fee christmas present from mossback.

Beats the he** out of me how a guy can have much fun following a bunch of people around all over the countryside and then basically just pulling the trigger when they say: "Shoot that one!" Why not just donate the money to the F&G and then go out and take pictures of the good you're doing! Am I missing somthing here other than the guy has lots of money to shoot big animals and grease other's pockets!

"Snuggie buck" seems a appropriate and deserving name. You boys are funny as ##### - I am laughing my ass off right now.

I agree that if that is the best you can do in Colorado with a massive army of head hunters and a year long tag old denny should be pissed!!

What did he pay for? I mean a kid found more than one buck that is better than this one in a week. I know all the best hunters in the world come from the bestest, greatest, and fairest of all states :).. With that said if I paid for what amounted to playin the gray area or borderline legal fence jumpin hunt then as a client I would be pissed.

We did see the highs and the lows of what the gov tag is all about this year. I guess this buck points out what is good and what is wrong with hunting these days.

Alot of you Guys still think there are 40" Bucks waltzin around in every Colorado Unit huh?

Better go check some of them Units out,and while you're at it make sure & take your Cameras,We wanna see them!

I didn't see anybody THRASHIN squirell the last couple years for postin pictures of PISSCUTTERS but the minute He's involved with a PISSCUTTER being killed He's gettin his Ass reamed!

So Denny shoots a PISSCUTTER,maybe that's what he wanted?

I don't know & don't care, but the second MOSSBACK takes a Sub 500" Bull or a Sub 300" Buck you boys act as if He hasn't done his job!

I never thought I'd see Big Game Hunting become what it is today!

Bessie I agree totally that squirrel doesn't deserve to raked over the coals for this, there is no proof he got anything out of MB and whos to judge if he did.

There aren't monster bucks everywhere in CO for sure but if you've killed the critters this guy has and you can just go buy another super tag next year why would you shoot a buck that although great I don't think he is gonna be as pleased with as a hard hunting Joe hunter on a state tag hunt would have been.

I don't give a chit one way or the other if mossback or anyone else is involved because it's not in the who it's in the how and I can't help get the feeling this guy sits on his azz and waits for a call from whoever to just show up and pull the trigger, and if it didn't involve a great buck that WE ALL own a piece of it would be none of my business but it does so not only CAN I hate it and ##### about it I WILL.

Bessie I never thought I would see hunting become what I has either.

Jealous? BULLCHIT! I will take my public land DIY CO buck from this season over ANY buck even if he's a world record killed the way some of these super tag bucks are killed!

Ironically, that buck getting killed is the best thing that ever happened to me. It might divert pressure off my favorite units for a change. Not to mention, it will draw future pressure to Squirrel's stomping grounds too. People just don't look ahead. I actually feel bad for Squirrel, he is now going to experience what the rest of us have had to deal with...

People running over the shed areas starting in January, people ignoring gates and road closures, people flying chuteplanes over winter areas, odds of drawing a tag start dwindling, people showing up to make videos...it is a vicious cycle. And when Garth Carter puts it in his magazine the fat lady has sung.

Remember, when you sell out a buck for a finder's fee, you aren't just breaking the law, and you aren't just selling out that one deer...you have sold out your spot to the deer lynch mob for eternity.

guess squirrel wouldn't be picking up those sheds after all.

feel the same way bill, much more satisfaction in hunting the animal fair and square,as in scouting and harvesting the animal that you put the time in yourself, not with a bunch of eyes doing everything for ya,maybe denny will start doing some diy hunts, but i highly doubt it.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-12 AT 08:08AM (MST)[p]Sounds like he's one of those that you have to give directions to the dinner table and then when he can't find it take him by the hand and lead him to it, LOL!!! Too bad some have to do things that way, but whatever lights your fire I guess, and at least his big money is going towards conservation (I hope!).

Yep minus the money for the collar and capturing him and flying him to relocate him and then the study so far! Knowing what the govt. Pays for such things I think conservation might have lost a little something on this one.

When I was 20 I would hunt anywhere in and type conditions and weather. Slept in a crappy old tent. When I hit 40 getting a good nights sleep in a hotel then hitting the woods was inviting. 50 brought on a new level and while I still hunt out of my Spring Bar tent when I need to I prefer a nice lodge with someone else cooking. On the downhill road to 60 in 2012 I can still run with my younger friends but I am fortunate. I live well and work out often. My best friend and hunting partner is 66 and had a heart attack last year. This past month he needed additional stents inserted. His running the mountains are gone and he will need help getting around, finding he game and getting it out of he woods after the shot. Does that make him a "Fat Pig". I wish some of you all would step back and look ahead when you are older or look in the face of your fathers. We are so quick to judge. I am glad to see Mr Alstad still hunting at his age and contributions to the wildlife with his donations.

There's only one way to change and that is to change the system petition the wildlife commission to stop selling Gov. tags take the average price of each Gov. tag in Colorado and raise the prices of the general license's to stop the legalized poaching.
Its a solution to the problem instead of just continuing to B!TCI-I about it.

Believe me tracker I look straight to my pops when I judge this situation, he is 71 and every year gets more challenging as although very healthy for his age he's got some health issues. I refuse to hunt without him and he declines to hu t from a lodge with a payed guide pointing out a deer he knows like the back of his hand , that he's been watching since summer.

My dad had a PIW tag in NV a few years back and long story short after a few missed opportunities he ate the tag. There was numerous calls from guides prior to the season as soon as the draw results came out, the answer was always the same, no thanks.

I have no issue with a guided hunt if that's what makes you happy but when we are talking about hunts suchnas this, that is a different animal, IMO.

I have no doubt Denny is okay with his choice of hunts but that doesn't mean we have to be, that is how the laws we live by in the hunting world came to be, hunters saw the way some people did things and as a majority didn't like it and thought it was ethically wrong so they made the decision to outlaw certain behaviors. Let's face it a non hunter or worse an anti hunter doesn't care how an animal dies even if it's poached its just another dead animal, hunter ethics only matter to a hunter IMO and most hunters are not okay with this from what I have seen and heard.

It is not the tag that is offensive. It is the boarder line illegal, grey area, sneaky crap behind the scenes/kill at all cost mentality that is offensive.

this post make me want to puke. you guys have nothing better to do than whine and cry about a buck. what a joke.. glad denny was able to kill a nice buck, even on the winter range..

And the kill at all cost comes with the tag if you spend 45-150K for a tag whats a few more thousand to seal the deal. Its either a DOW officer ride around with the guys who buy a tag or that win a raffle to make sure its all legal and legit or stop selling the tag and I am not for Government Regulation but they are not going to loose any money especially in this economy so making the price up on the general license is the only way to do it.

That must be one hell of a place to live with all of those nice bucks running around and the only one living in the entire area is Squirrel right? The way some of you rocket scientists on here have it figured there is no possible way anyone else could have known about this deer but him...............asstonishing.

Well solesearcher36,

How bout you fill us in??? The way it looks to most of us is the buck showed up again this year, squirrel took a few pics and posted them and did 1 of 2 things. Maybe he called and told MB he had a big buck found. Or 2 One of MB guys saw the pics squirrel posted and then got in touch with him wanting the guy in the snuggie to kill this buck. Thats what it looks like and so far squirrel has said absolutly nothing about this buck being killed. He has kept quiet. so again that looks like he either knew or helped in this buck being harvested.
I know if I was watching this buck for years and then all the sudden showed up on MM killed by a gov tag and I had no clue, I would drop some F bombs. but he has kept quiet and said nothing.
I dont really care if he sold this deer out or not. And to be honest if I was in his shoes with a big buck spotted and Mossback was offering 10 G finders fee I would massage snuggie boys feet on the way up. Im sure squirrel has got alot of crap, nasty pm's which isnt right. But all things point to a sell out. Im just surprised they couldnt find a bigger buck for the gov tag!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I disagree dryboot, I don't think squirrel was involved in the death of this buck, at least not directly. Maybe someone who knows him and where he photos these deer saw the buck here and put two and two together and cashed in or maybe this is one of those deer that EVERYONE in the area he lived saw and knew about and cashed in. Or maybe CODOW wants to keep this money man pouring the dough in and since they have a collar on him................ This actually makes more since to me than squirrel cashing in.

Squirrel has been here long enough to know he will be thrashed for finding bucks for MB and gov. Tag holders for pay, so why would he even post a pic if was just gonna turn him over to MB? I don't think he would. I don't know squirrel personally but I don't think he cashed in, if he did he did and he will have to look in the mirror and decide if he is ok with it.

First, that drawing is priceless!! Very well done.

Kind of surprising, 3 of the 4 gov tag bucks I've seen have been dissapointingly small. The best one taken by one of the raffle guys. Good for him and coloradoboy for helping him. I'm guessing Squirrel turned MB onto the whereabouts of the collared buck. His silence is deafening here but maybe he's out gathering nuts for the winter before hibernation sets in. I wouldn't blame him for taking a finders fee though.

I'm in the huntindad4 camp on this one and unless squirrel says he did what people suspect or someone comes up with indisputable evidence that he did I hate to see people speculating on it. Even if he did it's up to him to decide what he wants to do with the information because it's not illegal or maybe even unethical to tell somebody about the buck. My guess is that a lot of people had seen that deer and if that's the case the MB crew would probably have been able to find out about it too.

He didn't offer anything in that post!?!

He asked if they were big enough and there was no response and there was no re-post by squirrel asking if he wanted to be hooked up.

The OP of that thread posted clearly asking for help in finding a big buck for a GOV. TAG and when squirrel posted he didn't say heres one and I sent you a PM with my contact info and a price and I will show him to you or anything similar. I think you make a huge leap in thinking he was offering that buck to the OP and this one.

The silence doesn't mean chit to me except that all the knuckleheads on this site will just doubt what he posts so why post here trying to defend himself for not doing what you think he did, pointless. More likely a person would come on and claim to have not done it if he did, most when guilty of something suspect wear their jaw out declaring their innocence, it is when a man is secure in either what he did or didn't do that he let's his actions speak for him not his mouth or in this case his written word. Squirrel just keeps taking pics of nice pisscutters and posting them here and let's you sit on your azz and cast stones.

Sad to say the only mistake Squirrel made was posting a picture of that buck on MM. We all like to see pictures of big bucks but posting them on the internet alerts other hunters that will go out of their way to figure out the 'where'. I can remember when I was hunting for MassNTrash I has several hunters trying to figure out where I was hunting. I actually went so far as making a false map and releasing it pretending I was in a druken stuper and taunting the internet wannabees by daring them to hunt where I hunt saying "99.9% of you could never do it". It worked and I got a bunch of guys of my tail. Moral of the story, if you post up pics on the internet, there are many wannabees sitting on the sidelines that are willing to poach your spots.
