score?

Is it just me or.... how many of you see a pic and a posted score on here and your immediate reaction is BullS%#t! Just curious. how dumb do people think everyone else is?

i think it is a domino effect, one guy says his bull scores 350 when really it is 300 and the next guys says gosh my bull is that big and so on and so on...

There's no doubt more than a few animals on this site have been measured by a magic tape measure. But I think sometimes (not always) the photo itself may make or break peoples opinion of the animal. Some pics make average animals look great and some make great animals look average. Here's a buck I killed in 2007. Just by looking at this picture what do you think he scores?

I have more pics and an official score I'll share later.

177" to 181"

Can't judge them from the side, he'll look like a different deer from a different perspective, is that the pic you would have chosen to post of that deer?

Does anyone really submit the least impressive picture of their buck to be viewed by thousands? Seems that the pics posted are going to be the ones that make the animal look the biggest 99 times out of 100. Pictures that can get a guy in the ballpark of what he is looking at if you wade past the animal being shoved out away from the person or a guy sitting back behind the deer with skylined horns. A 200 inch mule deer is impressive to look at to say the least, if there's no wow factor or something in the pic that makes you drool, its not gonna come close when the inches are added up. I don't understand why people need to blow things WAY out of proportion, score shouldn't really matter, you pull the trigger cause you are happy with the deer, if you have to over exagerate its size when it hits the ground how satisfied with it can you really be?

Cant see inside width.....
I would guess between 162 and 167.

Shoot em till their dead

I totally agree with you. Of my buck this year, I have three pics that look way different. One makes him look 180, one about 145 and one right at 160-170 (he scores 165) Pictures can be deceiving both ways. But at the same time, most tend to post the highest possible score (or sometimes impossible score) of their animal, right?

Looks like about a 150 class buck to me...

Serious, hornstar?

Secondly, your quote and picture don't correlate and this is a hunting website. . .

I don't think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes
almost everything, even nature.

I totally agree that 99% of people will post up the most impressive pics if... they have multiple pics. But I still maintain pics can lie, and so do people. We all know someone who will get caught up in the story and stretch the truth. Here is a frontal pic of the buck above. Does this pic change anyones mind about the score.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-11 AT 06:19PM (MST)[p]Horn_star, Most people would disagree with you.

Closer to 170 I would think...
What I want to know Horn_Star is why you are always negative?
Not even a cape buck? Seriously! I bet the only cape you like is the one on your back when you wake up in the morning with your boyfriend.

Shoot em till their dead

My first guess was mid 160s give or take 10 because of only having the side view. With the frontal shot I'll go into the 180" area or close to it now. Who cares, as it's a beautiful buck and who gives a flying flock what Hornstar posts! He and several other like him seem to just post to get attention and they are getting real good at showing what kind of class they have---NONE!!!

I like the side view for estimating score as the width is the least relevant factor.(most bucks will have enough inside width to absorb the longest main beam measurement IMO) Ergo I can feel like I am getting really close from a side view. Damn fine buck!

Horn_star go hunt public land, not during the rut, without a 365 day season and kill a nice buck, until then shut the freak up. No one cares if you shoot big deer behind the walls of your reservation.

"Does this pic change anyones mind about the score. "

Yeah, changed my opinion some! He looks at least 10" bigger anyhow, 160 class! I'll say 158"

I do agree with the original poster but good luck to seeing the pic's that make the buck look smaller? lol :)

Sooo, If he is 32" outside then his ears are 30" wide. Or is this one of those times where people lie......Just say'n

A bad day hunting still beats working!

No no lie ears were 27 and im not talking about either of the deer that are already mounted up deer was aged at 9 and had the body of a tank i will find the picture of him alive from the year before i killed him

To reply to the original post-yeah I think some people that post up pics and then the score must think that people here on MM are stupid. Anyone remember the 235" buck in an earlier post?

Now for my off topic comment: Horn_Star's hunting of the Rez is the affirmative action of the hunting world. Get the little feller out in the real world and watch him fail. Being impressed by Horn_Star killing big deer? Where he is, on his sovereign nation? It's about as impressive as finding a mustache in Mexico.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-11 AT 10:05AM (MST)[p]here is the picture of him in 2009 killed him in 2010 and i did lie i just found my sheet that had all the measurments on him and he was 31 offical so my bad by an inch but what he measured out at for gross is what surprised me i will post it up later

for the original post ya i think people post some crazy numbers on here and if you want to call them out then go for it or ask them to post up the score sheet ive got it for mine i just wanted to see if everybody would be as surprised as i was cause when i killed my buck i thought he was 27 wide but ended up at 31 outside

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-11 AT 10:30AM (MST)[p]Lonetree's buck is around 175.Big6 is closer to 185.JMO.What's going on with his ear?

Both are shooters,IMO.I don't know about you guys, but I'd sure like to see some of Hornstar's giants. So far,the only thing I know for sure is he has a giant mouth.

he ripped the one in a fight the year before and that is how i knew that i had killed this buck is because that little flap was still there but some of it had died and fallen off (is what im assuming) but part of it that didnt fall off and kinda curled into his ear. we called this deer floppy because of that and when he would walk that peice would kinda just flop up and down

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-11 AT 04:14PM (MST)[p]So we got guesses from 150-185 on my buck. That's a pretty broad range. When I first saw this buck I guessed he would be about 180. Killed him the next day and he ended up being bigger. I think his large ears and body size hide his score. He's not a gagger/wow buck, but he scores very well with very few deductions. Jack Rensel Officially scored this buck at the Ogden DWR at 194 gross and 190 2/8 Net.

And this people, is why guys come on here and feel like they need to stretch the tape and turn a 175 into a 185 etc. When the hell is a net book typical not a wow buck? Do you know how many people that hunt today will NEVER even see a deer that good? Prospective...reality-how about it?

Your just another native with a chip on his shoulder, why dont you go drink some 40's and spotlight some deer.
Id guess 160ish off the first pic.

Son,

Don't get me wrong, I was excited as hell to harvest this buck, no matter what he scored. But it was the icing on the cake when I did get him measured. As we can see from the MM score guesses above pics can be very deceiving. Big6, Jack measures for Boone & Crockett.

I wasn't meaning to single you out but it's really frustrating when you meet other hunters that have never killed a good buck or even a Muley at all and they say similar things. Most guys, if they saw a legit 180" deer on the hoof, they would probably crap.
You have to have been around a lot of deer as well as the right kind of deer to know the difference and even then, a 180" deer will still grab your attention...I know it does mine but the again, I'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to deer hunting.

Huh i had no idea that he was a measurer i will keep that in mind.
i shot my buck in 2010 on a general unit with a muzzleloader he grossed 186 and 174 net and my point of posting wasnt to highjack the thread but to show pictures are decieving but a couple guessed right on when i killed the deer i thought 170 type deer cause of lack of mass and i thought going off of the ears he would be like 27 then to my surprise when i got him down he grew on width but still thought 170 but there is no way i would have ever passed up this buck.
5205taylor_albrecht_muzzle_buck_10-2-2010_008.jpg

I wouldn't pass up that buck either big6. Nice work especially on a general tag. Large ears on a buck can make them though to judge. My buck went 26 wide and his ears were about the same.

Sometimes pictures don't do a buck justice and sometimes pictures can make a nice average buck look huge. If any of you have followed the guess the score threads on this site over the years you'll see one thing that is constant, guesses are all over the place. :) Another thing that is constant is that as soon as someone puts a score on thread about a deer they killed there will be a bunch of people instantly call the hunter out.

Here's a buck I killed a few years ago. This is one where I've had MMer's tell me I don't know how to score worth $hit. When I killed this buck, score was the last thing on my mind. I had video'd this buck for several years previous and when I encountered him while hunting I knew exactly who he was and because of that history, I knew I wanted him. When he was on the ground, I was thinkin' he was a 180 class NT. I was shocked when I put the tape to him. He goes 199 6/8 gross NT as a 7x7 with an 18 inch spread. I think his narrowness and his short G2 on the one side is what really threw me off.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-11 AT 10:19PM (MST)[p]Here's a buck I really messed up on when I saw him alive. He has a short G3 on the side behind the brush. I leaned my rifle against a tree and pulled out the video camera and played with this buck at 20 yards for over 20 minutes before I let him go on his merry way and collect the doe that was on the other side of me. The whole time I was thinking this was a nice tall 170 class buck.

Good thing my buddy knows a good buck when he sees one and he killed it a couple days later. He had 27 inch mains. The strong side was 90 inches. This buck ended up grossing 183.
