I am interested in going to on a Colorado Mule Deer hunt with some friends in a few years. i am looking for some advice on some units to go to. Do they require points or are they over the counter etc... i don't want your honey holes just some good units to start looking at.

Throw dart at the state and pick an area. Good muleys all over the state. Don't think you HAVE to HAVE points to get a good deer either. There are no OTC units but some that you can draw as a first choice are still good units IMO. More points you have typically the better quality the hunt and animal. If I were a non resident I'd go with a 0 point unit and hunt.

up anyway."

find the units that doesn't take points to draw and start looking for a few that peak your interest and then start trying to find out infor on them.

I'm interested in doing the same thing. Have you received any good information yet?

I started looking at Colorado last year and it looks like they have great opportunies all over the place. It just depends on which areas are close enough to you, how long you can wait, and what kind of deer you'd be happy with. They have hunts that can be drawn with 0 points all the way up to 10+ points. If the plan is to hunt there in a few years you definitely should get a point this year. The deadline is April 3 and you will need to send in the fee for a deer tag and the preference point. They will refund you the amount of the tag after the drawing. Lots of info on their website:

You could also spend some time searching the archives here. Lots of good info from people that know the areas. The drawing odds tool on this site is a great thing too.

I am from southern Colorado and there are alot of good deer around here. The only bad thing is that most of them reside on private land. Are you planning on hunting private land or public? There is no over the counter deer tags in CO anymore. The only way to get a tag without drawing is to get a private land voucher through a outfitter or land owner. Just to let you know if you are going with your friends you can all apply as a group. This way you can all get tags and nobody is left out. The down side is that it may take longer then drawing by yourself. Where I live there is a lot of public land, but maily there is a lot of elk. I think the hunting pressure pushes them into private land most of the time. I spend a lot of time scouting and I can see good bucks before season, but when season comes around they disappear. I do know alot about the drawing system and my area, if you have any more questions just let me know. I hope this helps you out. Good Luck
