The DWR put this out,
2011s estimated hunters on each unit and season..
+ the current buck to doe ratios that will be used
to set permit numbers this year.................

This will help give an idea how many permits will be issued.

Here's the link.

So?

You're saying there was only a total of 1871 Hunters including all 3 seasons on the South Slope?

You Know?

I've about had enough of the Buck to Doe Ratio Mentality!

When we asked for total Deer Numbers in Utah the Numbers just didn't seem right!

Guess I'll just keep Huntin until I fill my Tag!

It's January & I still haven't punched it!:D

We did our own unscientific survey last weekend in 17C.
We saw 135 deer....6 bucks & 129 does for a 4.4% ratio.

2 spikes
2 two points
1 22" 3x4
1 24" Mature 2 point.
With genetics and ratios like this I am absolutely NOT telling anyone exactly where we were.

Last Sunday I was up cuttin Tracks!

Also counted Deer!

Fresh Snow & the Game was movin!

One Lion Track on the Rez!

Several Lion Hunters running around the Clock!

Got My Azz Stuck twice!

Not cuzz there was alot of Snow, cuzz the wind had made some big drifts!

Cut 3 different drainages!

Seen 63 Does & 2 PISSCUTTER Bucks!

1-SPIKE!

1-3 POINT!

The MOTL Buck was still with his Mother!

I run 119 miles off road to see them 65 head of Deer!

Set my scope up several times & looked in to where I used to see Deer!

Ya,I know, you don't/can't see/count them all,but I cut some good ground that day,the conditions were perfect & I'm tellin ya We are in Trouble!

GAWD I'm EXCITED about the 2012 Deer Hunt already!

I call bs on those numbers. Why so many tags for the Central units that have way low ratios? Is it just because its such a big unit?

So from your truck you could not count the same number of deer as the DWR? Humm? They must be full of it! Not saying that the model is the best tool, but you have to understand that there is a model, and yes it is based on science. I know you guys don't like science, but what else would you bases it on?

Wake TF Up & open your eyes 3pointless2!

Re-read my Post,GEEZUS!

Swear to GAWD you must work for the DWR!

I never counted em all!

Never claimed to have counted them all!

Where I seen 65 head,I use to see several hundred head!

You're right about one f'n thing,I can't count like the DWR!

I understand those numbers to be their estimate based on their phone surveys. It doesn't mean that part of those hunters didn't hunt some other unit too the same year. Some of those numbers are from double counts, one hunter may have hunted the Nebo and Wasatch and got counted twice(once for each unit). Also, the DH's weren't in there which would skew the southern units numbers to be showing low, since most DH are in southern utah. I highly doubt there will be 5500+ deer tags for the Nebo this fall. That would probably bring the Buck to do ratio down from it's current 10 to about 1 per 100. Ya, BTW if you couldn't tell Nebo stinks right now.

None of us here seem to count like the DWR, I also made a real effort to make a count in a Southern unit where there used to be thousands of deer. I counted 125 deer with 6 being bucks. How come all of us seem to be much closer on numbers than the DWR. Until they are willing to admit to the problem, to many tags will continue to be issued in each unit and numbers will continue to go down. You cannot put a thousand hunters in an area that has six bucks and expect them to survive.

These numbers have really shown that my fears from three years ago have come true. In 2009 the DWR went with a delayed WED. opener on the Nebo and Oquirrh/Stansbury units. Which caused a lot of poeple to go west and hunt the Tintic and West Desert units. Then many others hit the second opener, which did not lower pressure on those units that opened on Wed. but at the same time the DWR gave out 1,000 more tags for the Central unit. Then in 2010 the Oquirrh/Stansbury had a 3 day hunt. Which caused more pressure on the West Desert and Tintic units again. Now the low buck to doe ratio shows the effects of not controlling hunter numbers. Sure it brought up the buck ratio a little on the Oquirrh/ Stansbury but at a price of only hunting a couple days. No thanks. For this reason alone is why I support the new sub-unit system and am excited about the 9 day hunt again. Now lets cut a few tags back on these low buck to doe units.

those numbers make me laugh.
We need twice the units. The Central unit needs to be at least three, maybe fours units......And IMO they need to close some units for a couple of years. For those that think it will have no impact on deer numbers, think of the book cliffs.

Central unit now is three or four units check the new map, split it up you still hae a big area taking in the salt flats but not. Lot of deer so it's ok

Looks like the Inflated estimates/numbers will keep our populations overhunted on top of all the other problems they face........ AWESOME.

What a flawed system....

Why can't DWR put out the Deer numbers for their count in 2011 per unit ??? It time for the Real Hunters and Sportsman to challenge their numbers in the Big Game Board Meeting in May.

>Central unit now is three or
>four units check the new
>map, split it up you
>still hae a big area
>taking in the salt flats
> but not. Lot of
>deer so it's ok

White Shadow,
Sorry bud, I meant the Central Mountains (sky line drive). I would like to know why they lumped all the canyons into one unit.

1266 people hunted on sw des and they estimate the entire deer population at 1200. Maybe thats why the dang deer herds are being slaughtered way to many hunters in some areas. i think this new micro mngmt plan should help get everyone distibuted better.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhaahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahhahahhahahhaahhahahhahahhahahhahahayhahhahahahhahahahhahahhahahahahhahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UT stole my last dollar for general season tags in 2011 never again will i hunt this state for deer and once i blow my elk and moose points i'm out of it for good. that is unless some major reform occcurs...........

They talk of the future, well they just lost it.........

old annis pulled that number right out of his ass, Or he did what he did last year and threw a hula hoop out his window of his f&g truck then counted the deer shitt inside the circle and used some scientific babbling bullshitt equasion to come up with 28.1

Tell you guy's what, I'm just sting here shankin my head..
We've finally had some good snow on the ground for a week
or so now, So I went for a ride this morning checking tracks.
The Indianola, Lasson Draw WMU is close to my house and I spend
a hellava lot od time on it, around it, even flew it in November. I knew deer numbers were down ,BUT, OMG!!!

Well, I just went there this morning and glassed, 5 years ago there
were AT LEAST a 1000 deer there, That number has fallen steady now
every year. Last winter there were still about 3 to 400 in this area. I just ran the bio's and spotting scope over SOOO much
untracked snow it was unreal,,And just a hand full of deer, it was shocking!

I know the DWR reads these forms, I also know they use the
Indianola deer herds in their Manti counts and buck to doe classification. Please Utah DWR, go to Lasson and do a deer count, compare it to traditional numbers dating back a few years before completing your Manti deer herd (2012)estimates..Thank you.

I agree longshooter, when will they finally admit there are not enough bucks to even take care of the doe we have and the doe we have is not good, yet they still have doe hunts. Time to close some areas and they are claim good buck numbers. Wake up DWR and come to the party.

longshooter its not 28 bucks to 100 on the peaks its 28 total bucks!!

same wit the rest of the units fellers.
there are exactly 100 does and x bucks per unit.
so there are roughly 3000-4000 deer in the state currently;
not 300,000 anis and co. got the numbers mixed up

He did say they were out their somewhere, that must be somewhere none of us have been before. With all of the sportsmen walking the hills, we still have not found that somewhere.

I've always been one who could hunt long and hard (and get lucky) and find a decent buck to kill BUT we usually figure on seeing 30-50 does for every buck we see. It's been this way for years!

According to the F&G info I should be seeing a buck per every 7 does. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. The buck numbers are NOT as high as they seem to think. With super low buck numbers it will be a contributing factor to negative overall herd health.

Unless we can get them to change even more drastically we'll continue to have poor b/d ratios.

good luck to us all!
Zeke

All I know is that when the DWR issued unlimited tag (200,000+) we had plenty of deer. I really think all these dammn tag cuts have cost us our deer herds. Lets start selling some tags to get the DWR motivated.

I've watched one of the best areas in this state for a general tag go down the toilet for killing does every year in the name of depredation hunts.

Ive also seen seen it happen on the nebo several years before. They were so successful with killing the does there they decided they needed to kill them all in alpine.

Now there working on the front for the last few years and it looks like there working on bountiful currently.

Who ever is issuing these doe hunts should be fired imho.

SW I couldnt agree more. What the hell is the story with Killing doe's in units that are under pop objective is what pisses me off even more than anything I.E. Panguitch lake and probably any other unit where shooting doe's is occuring. I saw this happen 10 or so years ago in Black canyon over by Antimony shooting the hell out of doe's for multiple years. Now that herd of deer on that slope of the Boulder and the north end of the Dutton are in terrible shape. I keep hearing transplanting is impossible well if 10% survival of that Bountiful slaughter happened thats a success but they wont even try. Its just too damn easy to kill em. If it was a damn fish they would try harder. Too damn bad.

I totally agree we all know the deer herd is way down, and they continue to have doe hunts, I know of one over by Parowan that happened after the buck hunt this year. Now that is really common sense, the deer herd is down but we will shoot a few more doe and see if that helps increase the herd. They must be listening to Anis, they are out their somewhere!!!

You are right sout & Low, when are they going to quit killing the does, and try to relocated them in other unit, north end of dutton could use some does, its in bad shape. Anis should step down, he's doing a very poor job with managing our mule deer.
