just my two cents.. i am sick and tired of everyone complain about the deer numbers in utah. i agree there is a probably a problem.. whether it be the damn lions everyone is so worried about or cars or harsh winters or over hunting. instead of spending your time complaining about decreasing deer numbers just do your part be a ethical hunter and spend your time looking in the hills for a good buck. and if you dont end up seeing a monster everytime you go out just enjoy your time in gods country hunting isnt always about seeing a ton of deer or seeing a monster, its about getting away from everyday madness and doing something you love, so they next time your discouraged about hunting isnt as good as it used to be, remember how lucky you are to see any deer at all

bush settle down buddy . its the offseason and there is not to much to talk about and its a topic everyone has on there mind

There is only one little problem

Bushman...

we would like to see our own children enjoy this great tradition along with the bountious blessing of landscape & pristine wilderness.

That requires "not complaining" but proactive participation in the political process that unfortunatley in Utah is not easy to navigate.

We are convinced that the DWR has become the slave to Big Game boards, politicians, SFW, land agencies, cattlemen and other entities that have their own agendas.

Let the DWR do the science independent of the messy Utah politics. The hunter with boots on the ground I believe is the best litmus test of the job they do.

Bushmen... hunters need to step up to the plate

Arguing on the internet is proactive participation in the political process?? LMFAO!! Whatever you gotta do to sleep at night dude...I call it complaining too!! I'm sick of it too!!

"remember how lucky you are to see any deer at all."

BUSHMAN - you don't go to work in a pair of dark brown wranglers and a tan colored shirt that says DWR on it do you? That sounds like something they would say. It's a mindset like that that will finally put an end to your mule deer hunting in Utah. You might as well sell you rifle and buy a good pair of hiking boots because that's all it will be in the future if more people adopt that theory!

It's always an adventure!!!

I could be pretty positive about the deer numbers if I killed a buck like Bushmen did last year.(to bad he shot it from the road)

UTAH NEEDS........A TWO YEAR TAG IN WHICH A HUNTER CAN ONLY SHOOT ONE BUCK FOR THE GENERAL DRAW AREAS. YES .....YOU CAN STILL HUNT, BE WITH RELATIVES & FRIENDS, ENJOY THE CAMP FIRE, SUN UPS & SUNSETS. YOUR CHOICE.......TROPHY HUNT OR SHOOT A MEAT BUCK.......BUT JUST ONE DEER HARVESTED IN A TWO YEAR PERIOD PER HUNTER.

THIS WOULD BE JUST A STARTING PLACE, BUT ITS BETTER THAN ANYTHING I HAVE HEARD OUT OF UTAH SO FAR. TRY THIS FOR 3-4 YEARS AND SEE HOW MANY CARRY OVER BUCKS ARE LEFT IN BALANCE. THIS IS MY IDEA AND WAS PRESENTED TO THE CALIF. DEPT OF FISH & GAME........(I PUT THIS ON MM ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO)......................YD.

It is hard to listen to those who want a tag but do not really care if there are any deer, just want time in the hills. Lets sell them a tag and put them all on the Little Sahara Sand dunes and let them have a ball. The rest of us are trying to bring back a deer herd for generations to come, and are willing to have no tag if that is what needs to be done.

People need to get used to the idea that there are just to many people, not enough deer, and too much technology to allow everyone to have everything, its not 1960 anymore, I wish it were but thats a different era. If you want meat and a hunting experience every year, then hunt cow elk, spike elk,and other animals that have robust and growing populations, if you just want to get out, then go fishing, hiking, take pictures, there are lots of things to do, we need to back off the deer a little in my opinion, things change.

This year I am not hunting Deer in Utah. I will save one buck for another year. I will put in for a point and see what the unit numbers look like next year. But with that said I will be Hunting Colorado I can't go a year with out going somewhere with family and friends.

Why does every thread about declining deer herds always turn into a discussion about taking hunters out of the field? Deer numbers are down because does and fawns are dying of natural causes, not because we harvest bucks!!! Issuing fewer buck tags will help the existing bucks to grow, it will not produce more bucks! If anything they should be selling more tags in order to fund habitat projects and control predators. If you feel like sitting out a season or two to help the bucks grow, you have options:

1. Don't buy a tag
2. Buy a tag, don't hunt
3. Apply for a unit that they have cut tags on. Because really that is the design of such a unit - to have people sit out and wait for the bucks to grow.
4. (My personal choice) Hunt mature deer. If you see smaller bucks you let them walk! It is not that hard! By doing this you can let the smaller bucks grow up, you can have a fun hunt, and you can support conservation by buying a tag. I started hunting this way about 6 years ago. Since then I've passed up quite a few bucks during my hunts and killed one really good buck. If it takes me another 6 to get my next trophy I will be thrilled about it!

The deer will come back in a few years. We had great range conditions this past year and I'm sure recruitment will be strong. Efforts are underway to reduce predators and that will help with a speedy recovery.

haha you got it Long!!! I was waiting for that, got called out a little sooner than expected! Good luck to everybody this fall, hopefully we can figure a way to continue to have muleys to chase regardless of the unit or weapon.

Funniest thing is guy makes thread about being annoyed with discussions about the UT deer herd and it turns into a thread about UT DEER HERD!

HILARIOUS!!

+ 1 Piper, good post!

Bill

Kill the buck that makes YOU happy!

I'll jump in YUKON,
I actualy like that idea....

It's kinda what the dedicated hunter does now....BUT,

I would love to see a two year hunting permit for a general
deer unit , and have all three hunts , but ONE buck deer.

That would probably even take pressure off the opening days
of hunts, Spread more time out in the field over the season.

It's interesting to hear and read what people are saying, most of the avid sportsmen, people who spend an inordinate amount of time in the field are scared to death about our deer herd. The weekend warrior and once a year outdoorsmen don't have a clue and could care less. the biologists live in a healthy state of oblivion.

for those that keep screaming that killing bucks has little to do with increasing a deer herd, the message that the avid sportsmen are trying to get across is not just the bucks. I think that they are really trying to say kill less deer, less does, less bucks, less everything.

The deer herd is in a tailspin, and i would trust the word of the avid sportsmen over the biologist in every case, they may not know the science, but they can in most cases do basic math.....

I think that I would fall under the avid sportsmen. I spend upwards of 200 days a year in the field. I am 23 years old, newly married and the state of Utah just lost me as a hunter. meaning they just lost my kids that will soon be coming, they just lost my rising generation. I can't take my kids hunting in this state and hope to teach them the principles of conservation, harvesting, all while keeping their attention. the experience just isn't there.

Now for all you biologists and guys crying more opportunity out solve that equation, you will not bring me back by issuing more tags I don't want your toilet paper. Your science will not bring me back or persuade me, i've heard it all and in most cases read it. the only thing that will bring me back is a better experience......

If they spent half as much time hunting yotes as they do complaining the problem would solve itself.

We keep blaming the yotes, we had yotes in the 50's, 60's, 70's and we still had alot of deer, we had bad winters and summers, we still had alot of deer. Just maybe they sold to many buck and doe tags, I know Anis and the DWR won't admit it.

+1 BerryBlaster. They are selling tags for an experience and product they just can't deliver....

Should be illegal to sell a tag for something you don't have. Coyotes might contribute to the problem but way to many hunters that hunt from mid august to November what chance does a few bucks have with all the orange they see coming at them each year.

I'll disagree with Lil Beav!

I'm not saying Kill less Does!

I'm saying don't kill a Doe anywhere in the #####damn State!

Until the Utah DWR/Biologists get this TARD Mentality of Buck to Doe Ratio's out of their Thick Sculls and star worrying more on bringing Deer numbers back You can Kiss it goodbye!

Won't be long & We'll be down to 5,000 Deer statewide but By GAWD at least We have a 14 to 100 Buck to Doe Ratio, that'll satisfy all the Hunters in the State won't it?

She's a done deal boys!

YD---Your type of thinking "out of the box" sounds like exactly what needs to be done out there. BuzzH mad a good comment on the plight of the mulies in Wyoming recently and that was that dedicated guys should pass on the small bucks and if they are in an "any deer" area and want meat to shoot a whitetail towards the end of their hunt because the WT is doing well. I don't beileve you have that alternative in Utah though.

whoever the dip ##### up there who said i shot my buck from the road can suck it. i am 17 years old and work my ass off so i can have enough money to set out cameras and have gas money to drive to where i hunt. i worked so hard for my buck. i spent my own hard earned money to get my buck scouted and patterned and i shot him well away from any road.. and to kill a 200+ inch buck on general archery DIY you have to be doing something right. if you want the real story you can check page 1-2 in JAN_FEB issue of Muley Crazy
