At the end of feb, my little boy turns 14. Time goes way too fast. For his birthday, I thought I would do a little Dad bragging and show some of his accomplishments.

This is just shy of his first birthday... His first word was "buck"

He always has loved bucks...

In 2005, at age 7, he got his hunters saftey card. Fur and feathers were no longer safe!

In 2006, I surprised him with a New Mexico buck tag and he made good on it with his first buck at age 8.

And an even bigger buck at age 9...

And at 11, he really outdid himself. 203" 8x9. New Mexico has been kind to Jared in a big way.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-12 AT 06:36PM (MST)[p]Wow that kid has harvested more animals then some men I know ! Is he even a teenager yet ?
Those are some nice bucks !!
Happy fourteenth birthday !!

I can't wait to take my son out! That's an excellent timeline, I Like how his smile is just as big on his little deer as his monsters. True Passion.

Didn't I see him in eastmans with that 3rd new mexico buck. He's got me beat hands down. Spoiled for life. We better keep an eye on that one. Happy Birthday Jared. Save some big ones for the rest of us old guys that have hunted all our lives and never shot deer as nice as yours.

Happy Birthday to your son. Judging from the smile on him you have done a good job raising him. Excellent bucks by the way.

DKMuley,
Lots of fond memories in those pictures and hopefully many more to come. I have "spoiled" my son as well, with many great hunting trips in his early years. I am not sure who has had more fun...me or him, but we now have 2 decades of great hunting experiences together that I will cherish forever. My son is my favorite, and pretty much only hunting companion and every day outdoors is special.
It looks like you have done the same thing.
Very Cool!
Happy Birthday Jared, and keep on pushing your "old man" at least for another decade or two.

Happy Birthday. I love the times spent in the out doors with my Boyz. I have been blessed to have three. So lucky me I have had three times the fun. Great Post DAD.

Great series of pictures no doubt about it.

Can you tell us about his first rifle (looks to be a featherweight?) and his second rifle. What cartridges did he start with and switch over into?

Thanks,

Have a 6 year old and a 5 year old, not to early to start planning for them.

Need to set up a 22 for sure asap.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great comments, guys. The rifle I started him off with was my old winchester 70 featherweight 30-06 chopped down to fit. He used remington 125 grain managed recoil ammo. When he turned 11, I moved him into a full size Remington 700 in .270. I since had the piece I cut off the winchester reinstalled to full size and started using it again myself. (He used it this year again on the antelope and elk since we both had tags) Both of his big bucks were shot with his .270. He shot the bear with my brothers .243, I was busy working and just barely made it down there in time to be a part of that.

I highly recommend the managed recoil ammo for the kids, it does just fine out to 200 yards and that was about as far as I wanted him to be shooting then anyway.

I forgot to load my favorite pic of them all! Jareds first official trophy at 2 years old. When I asked him what he thought after he shot him, he said "Thats what he gets for growling at me!"

Excellent thread. Thanks for sharing your family success. Your son seems like a real trooper. Book bucks before puberty lol

alot of great memories right there.

Those are precious memories.
Enjoy every minute, as they grow up so darn fast in hindsight.
Mine is 19 now and I often go back and cherish those moments we spent hunting and fishing, undoubtedly some of the best times of my life.
Good on you for raising a sportsman.

Happy birthday Jared. Congrats on some great trophies. Way to bring him up Dad. Jared keep up the great job and building them memories with your father!!!

Now that's what it's all about!

What an awesome way to spend quality time with your son. well done.
