Wyoming mule deer points

I bought another point last year. I now have 4 points. It is my opinion that points for deer in WY are not worth the money. 40 dollars per year adds up. LE units 102,84,119,141, etc are not much better than region tags from what I have heard. You usually can draw region tags for 1-2 points. It will take you 10 plus years to draw a top LE unit unless your lucky.

Now the problem is the deer herds are suffering bad in regions G,H, and K after last winter. It will likly take good weather for 3-4 years for deer to rebound some.

What is everyone doing?

!. Buy points and hoping things improve?

2. Quit the points game for deer?

3. Hunt and hope you luck out finding a good deer?

I think buying points for lopes and elk maybe worth it in Wy. They have a product to sell. What are your thoughts about deer?

Some states don't take your points away as long as you hunt or apply for some big game species. I wish WY was like that. WY makes you spend 40 dollars every two years or they take your investment away. I already have twice the points needed to draw the region I want to hunt. I just don't want to hunt WY until the deer is a little better. Anyone else in this situation?

I blew my wad of NR points (4 also) this past year. It wasn't worth chasing anyone as I was ALWAYS going to be 1 less than max. Bit the bullet and went in the special draw for U-125. Not planning on building up deer points again.

I try to hunt what I can, I think BuzzH said it right when he stated ALL the units can produce dont put all your eggs in one basket. (theres no unit worth waiting for) Greg pm you phone # my bud took a dandy bull in NV.

Agree you are wasting your time.

4 years of points is not that big of an investement.
Get a region general tag and give it hell. You are still deer hunting more than one state if you also hunt your home state- and doubling your odds .

Build points in other states for deer.

I'm rapidly coming to that conclusion also, but will at least hunt the Region tag I always do since I'm way back in MI.

Stop building points and hunt as many years as you can. Western Wyoming is obviously not what it once was but it is still a fun place to hunt. Awesome country and at least you are out trying. If you are building points for a unit with true trophy hunting in mind I would not do it in Wyoming. Use that money in another state and use your money in Wyoming on a chance at a fun hunt every couple of years.

I spend $40 - $60 or more every week just on gas during hunting season which usually lasts 5 - 6 months every year. If $40 is breaking the bank, it sounds like you might need to find a cheaper hobby...

I'm going to continue to build points with the hope that someday there will be a great LE unit. I apply for eight or nine states every year and have been building points for a while now. I don't have the time to hunt Wyoming every couple of years so building points makes since to me. Everyone has their own opinion. Yes, you do have to spend $40 a year for the point but you don't have to buy a license. I buy a point for deer, elk, and antelope and it costs $120. That's cheaper than many of the states I apply for.

you spend more than that to buy the license to apply in Idaho, plus you increase your odds to draw in the future....

Well some caught my message. My message is that WY does not have a deer product that is worth obtaining a lot of points. Quality of region tags are about the same as LE tags.

Some say just buy the point anyway. Well I have a 13 yr old boy and a 18 yr old boy. I apply for hunts in UT, AZ,CO,MT,and WY. I'm not a wealthy person. I enjoy seeing my boys have a fun hunt, a chance at a quality animal, and lots of fun memories.

Like I said I build points in WY for elk, and lopes. Last year we hunted lopes and had a fun time. My 12 yr old shot his first big game animal. I was just wondering what most guys were doing with deer in WY. The herd has gone down hill and you just can't wait til they come back, with out the DWR making you buy points that you don't need for a region tag, for a product they don't currently have. I guess I don't want to spend $326.00 on a tag plus burn 160 dollars on points. That is 486 dollars on a tag when the deer herd is in poor condition. Then the DWR tells us they will take away your points,"investment" if you don't continue to buy points for deer. That is my complaint.

Greg keep enjoying the antelope hunts with the kids and I there deer tag is about $128 for them also. Put in together and you will increase their odds of drawing.

Deerlove, sent you a PM. My boys have 1-2 deer points now. They have enough to draw most region tags. I will need to buy them extra points as well to keep them.
