top choice

as a diy hunter what would be your top choice area/state for a trophey mule deer hunt? say 180 or better.

Henry's deer by far for the best quality/ease of hunt. I've never seen so many 180 deer from my running ATV within bow range in the fall right after season.

My first choice would be Saskatchewan. And I'd try to get Cam Barlow to take me.

After that, I'd go with Scott Taylor of Bear Paw Outfitters in northern Alberta. And the Henries would be right in there with northern Alberta for second choice.

And I'm still hopingg to hunt the Gunnison Basin once in my life if the deer recover from the nasty winter a few years back. But that's in the future, not now.

brd. i hunted region g in 2010 and wasnt to impressed. but maybe i wasnt in the best area. im hunting region h this year around the hoback jucntion.

ive never herd of this henries hunt what is that all about?

i think colorado will be my next md hunt ill have two points this year. im not sure what i want to do yet i know i can get a tag alot sooner if i go for an archery tag but i also dont want to burn 2 or 3 pts for such a low sucess rate so im kinda on the fence. how many pts will get me a solid rifle hunt?

Colorado no doubt. Easy to get tags and 180 potential in every unit, even the leftover ones.
If you have lots of money then that is a different ball game...

If you've never heard of Henry mtns. then forget that because you are hundreds of years from drawing a tag there.

Northern Utah.

You thought the Greys wasn't to awesome?! And now your gonna hunt the Hoback with every Tom, ##### and Harry?! I do hope you find that elusive muley though.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

The Greys still has some big bucks,it takes lots of glassing, and get into the steep and you will find them. This country is not for the average drive around on a 4-wheeler type.

For a DIYer there is no doubt, British Columbia is the place to live if you want to kill trophy muleys. 3 months of trophy muley hunting every year with OTC tags and a Provincial baglimit of 3 deer a year.

You guys are way off base if you think region G is the best place to kill a 180 inch public land buck ! Hekk if you actually believe that you are way off planet.

Best place? That I don't know. There are 180+ bucks in G. Common? No. But it is where I would go as I know the area well.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-29-12 AT 09:55PM (MST)[p]There is a lot to be said about knowing an area well. It may not be productive for most people, but someone who hunts it regularly and knows it well, could do well consistently. Even in areas not known for producing big bucks or areas that are said to be hunted out.

Might want to look at Non Typical Outfitters and S-N-S Outfitters web sites to see the bucks they got in 2011.

Can you hunt any parts of Canada as a non resident DIY?

Region g is an awsome hunt. I just thought I would see bigger deer I'd say the average deer I saw was 140ish and I saw one good Buck maybe a 170 it was hard to tell cause i jumped him on the way out. It was my first DIY high country hunt. I hunted near Carol creek without doing any scouting so maybe there are alot better areas in region g but as a non Res. With no scouting they are hard to find.
