I think this is the widest buck that I have seen in person. how wide do you think he is? I'm no good at guessing. Post up some pictures if you have some wide bucks. Doesn't matter if they score well. I think they look cool.

nice pic- to m e that buck is really not very wide-his bones do go out but his ears are up and small and he is not very high and prolly around 26 or 27 ish at best

He looks pretty young, I agree with the guesses so far, about 27 in wide. I know I would watch that buck pretty close. He might be pretty decent in a couple years.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

27" in my opinionated and looks like a four to five year old with small ears and not great genetics but could be younger?

Kill the buck that makes YOU happy!

Thanks Guys. I agree, I would not say 30". I've never put a tape on a buck that is this wide, so it's hard to say. I'm pretty sure he is an older deer that just has some bad genes. hope you like the picture.

I'm guessing his width about 28"
Here's a buck I passed on this past year, which I think is right at 30" but poor forks.(young deer)

There's always next year

Shoot him for a "meat buck" next year. Having done that you will accomplish wiping out some crappy genes and getting us a measurement!

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Yea, he is a tricky one... He's got a decent spread, but those small ears help him out a bit, I think. I guess I'll just have to put a tape on him!

If you give him 2 1/2" between the base of his antlers and measure it out, it comes to 30".

Don't think he is quite 30 - but he is in that neighborhood. I don't think you can accurately take a 3D measurement from a 2D image. I would say he is close enough to not worry about arguing about it. But I am wrong about these things often enought that I wouldn't be surprised if he were anywhere from 23 - 30. Pics can be very deceiving both ways.

Great buck to take in a management unit or during the general season.

Mntman,

I should use your measuring method for my you know what! I still don't believe I can talk my wife into thinking it's 10 inches!! That buck's ears MIGHT make 20 inches laid flat out. Give him an extra 3 inches on each side...little less on one, little more on the other...and you have a 25 to 26 inch deer.

I've been hunting Mexico for 25 years...score was never even talked about until the last 5-10 years. It was all about spread and we got a LOT of practice through the years. My dad and I now own a ranch that we have managed for the last 10 years. We see 20 bucks a day like this. He loves to take pictures and compare bucks from year to year. He would call this one "cute".

If you want to argue about the "technology" you used, notice that most of your marks overlap the ones beneath it.

93, not sure where I critized you in your superior hunting skills or talked crap about your wife, or even said this was a monster buck.
I tried to have the grid lines show up on the picture but I can't get them to save but if you open it in paint and select grid you can easily count the spread, I am sure even you could do that all mighty spread hunter. In case you can't it comes out to 38 lines, 3 lines equal the distance between the bases, IF that distance is 2 1/2" then the spread actually comes out to 31.66" since it is a GUESS, I rounded down to 30"

Mtnman,

I meant no disrespect. We're all mule deer lovers here. I was more attacking the technology/computer info that seemed to "prove" this was a 30" buck. It reminded me of "Fast Al" using the computer to preach to us about global warming. First thing they teach you about computers is garbage in garbage out. NOT saying you tried to manufacture the info! Just saying something didn't work right. Nothing.personal man.

This thread has had me giggling from the beginning. Trying to make a 30 inch buck out of a 25/26. Now, I don't want to piss off any Chinese people. I AM NOT A RACIST. If anyone has some funny ##### to say about Italians, go ahead....I enjoy a laugh just like the next guy.

Anyway, everyone knows that the Chinese love puzzles...always trying different combinations etc. Well, my grandfather used to say....Ching Chong Chinaman sittin' on a fence...tryin' to make a dollar out of 15 cents!

Now that's funny right there:)

Interesting subject! At first glance he looks 30" easy but when you really look at em, something ain't right. Most have said small ears and i'm inclined to agree.

I'd guess em 27-28" but wouldn't be surprised to be off one way or the other.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-30-12 AT 03:49PM (MST)[p]When bucks go straight out like that they always look wider than they really are... especially on hoof! Ive had a few experiences with a few like those that go straight out and then picked up their sheds and they turn out to be much smaller than expected. Its like an illusion... they just look wider when their beems go on that angle.

Id subtract a couple-three inches off of your first impression of him and then put a guess on him. My first impression of him was 30 wide which = 27-28 wide. This method I use also goes for bucks that are heading away from me or going over a horizon... Im not sayin its the best way to do it but its what seems to work for me.
