i honestly think that the pine vally unit would have potential to be hands down the best mule deer units in utah and one of the best period, with proper managment and if it was shut down to hunting for 5 or 6 years. but as of right now its a freaking joke. way too many people. how many of you agree?

i know that it is a general unit? im saying hypithetical if it was managed for a trophy unit it could potentially be one of the best units.

Hypothetically speaking.... every general season unit has the potential to be one of the best units.... If you shut down anywhere you will have good deer in 3-4 years... then you will have big bucks if managed right from then on out...... But it will never happen.

The overall deer numbers in that unit are definitely down from where they were a decade ago. But I know of several great bucks that have been taken out of there even in the past few years. They're still out there if you know where to look.

It's not been that many years ago that Pine Valley ,WAS,
in-fact a limited entry unit for deer.....

And, was, IN-FACT, a very good one...

BM, How old are you? Do you not remember/know of this?

i do remember when areas of the pine vally unit were. like bumble bee. and brose.. but i know the area holds great deer. brian bowlors 258 inch non typical. one of utahs largest typicals. was taken off the unit. by something frei i think? there are many good deer in the unit. but im talkin. the whole unit. both sides of the mountain. all the way to the train tracks. down to utah hill and the benchs. i am always surprised at the deer numbers in the unit you can see 200 deer a day. it just gets over hunted. *BUSHMEN*

Bushmen, I agree 100% . There are 2 300"+ muleys that have come off this Unit , and several other Book bucks . The Gene pool is there, it just needs to be managed as a trophy unit . As someone else has mentioned, there are still a few "Book" bucks in the Unit, it's just a matter of concentrating in the right areas to find them . 5 years ago, my buddy shot at a giant non typical and missed . Later in the day we heard shots being fired from a far, and come to find out as we were driving , we had approached an oncoming truck w/ a 235" to 240" buck in the back of there truck, the same buck my buddy shot at . Then 2 years ago, we found a fresh shed off a buck, 3 point frame only, but w/ 9 additional points . If we would've found the other shed, and the shed matched up equally to the shed we found, that buck would've been roughly a 245" buck . These caliber of bucks on this unit are w/o a doubt far and few between . But they're there somewhere .

Hey in case you missed it this unit according to the DWR population estimite has this unit overpopulated with deer.
They show 13000 and only room for 12800. If we could somehow fix it so the DWR was not in control of carrying capacity, population estimite, and tag numbers we wouldnt need to put this into a LE unit.
But if it were a LE unit the amount of public versus private and the genetic potenial would almost certainly make it the best LE in the state.

my uncle shot a 230 inch buck two years ago off the unit and i have buddies that have found 200 inch sets off the unit. i do agree that in some areas there is too many deer. but the buck to doe ratio is ridiulos. and i think that the deer are not evenly spread throughout some areas get pounded and some barely get touched.

great idea lets overrate a unit and get applicants racing to it!\

Its not any better then any of the other units around here, dont go hyping it up and overrating it making it impossible to draw for no reason. Sure its pumped some bombers off of it but so has every unit in the state.

If the DWR gets their way with 3600 tags on this unit will undoubtedly be the worst in the state!

Great unit to hunt big bucks, But they will never shut it down like they did Book cliffs.

This unit is in big trouble. In my opinion the unit can't take 3600 tags. They are recomending issuing 2200 rifle tags with a 9 day hunt. The deer on the Pine Valey migrate sooner than any other deer herd int he state. With this many tags it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. This is gonna be real sad to watch.

What is real interesting is that I spoke with Jason the biologist for Pine Valley. He told me that he feels that the Pine Valley can hold 18,000 deer. Can you imagine if we could grow the herd to 18,000 deer. Then everyone could shut up and hunt. There would be enough deer for the opportunist to get a tag and with that many deer trophy hunters could hold out for trophy caliber deer.

It is interesting that they have placed the population goal of 13,000 for this unit. This unit is huge and has so much habitat. Where did they get this number? This unit has had little development in the past 20 years and has a ton of habitat. Why are we settleing for 13,000?

Hooner, I agree w/ you 100% . There is a ton of habitat, and secluded habitat . Can you believe this Unit at one time had over 80,000 deer !! Crazy huh ?

In the 80s it was a give-me unit for shooting a buck, seems like everyone filled their tags with a buck quick.
