Has these units recovered from the historic winter kill of 2008? Also, I'm looking for a highcountry spot and stock hunt above timberline... Am I looking in the right spot? Thanks,

Hunted 44 last year and saw only three bucks above timberline. The biggest was a 22 inch 4x4.On day five I left the high stuff and killed a 28 inch 175 buck on blm next to a hay field. This buck had six other bucks with him, one as big as the one I shot. Its an easy choice where Iwould hunt.Goodluck!!!

I've mostly elk hunted in 444 for many years and in the Holy Cross Wilderness area around Avalance Peak and we've not seen many deer at all, even in the earlier seasons. I've never hunted in 44 or 45 which is the other side of the mountain so that might be better I'd guess.

I think it was 08 when I hunted the Holy Cross Wilderness. I had my brother with me and we backpacked in for 5 days and the only deer we saw was a dead fawn at about 13,000 ft. We saw alot of elk but no deer. On the way back out of there, we ran into an outfitter that told us the deer tend to be much lower, so we decided to give it one last day and hunt the aspens. It was so dry and crunchy that we did jump 1 deer but didn't ever see it. It's beautiful country but I can't say much for the hunting.

Just currious when you say early rifle you mean the high country wilderness hunt that takes place in September. Its a great tag if you do your homework and have tons of time to scout. If thats not you turn in the tag get your points back. There are huge deer there that time of year but it takes all summer to find one and the rest of the summer keeping an eye on him and just hope an archery hunter doesn't find him before your hunt starts, good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-15-12 AT 08:22PM (MST)[p]I wouldn't spend a lot of points on this tag currently. That said, if you did have lots of time to scout, there should be some good bucks. Numbers are still down too much to call it a great tag though. There is a reason it can be drawn for fairly low points.
