I don't understand

Why is everyone complaining about not drawing a general tag, when two months ago all I read about was how Utah needs to pull their heads out and manage the deer. I was lucky enough to draw but I wouldn't have been to bent if I didn't because I feel that they do need to start doing something. In my opinion it's a good thing that less people drew.

Seems like I've heard a lot of people upset not only b/c they didn't draw, but having no one in their family draw either. Years I don't draw I rely on other family members to draw so I can at least go out and hunt with someone. I think others are upset at not getting to hunt their desired area. These are more than likely results of having more/smaller units as I believe there were only 500 less tags issued total for the draw compared to last. It will take us a few years to get adjusted to the change and get a better grip how the system works. As for me this is the first time all of my family will have tags in the same year since they were OTC.

Its real for people now... Hate to say I told you so....

Everyone inmy family drew. All my friends drew as well... In fact, I don't know of any of my hunting buddies that didn't draw.

Some areas are going to be in more demand than others and it will take a while to see where it ends up. You just have to adapt to it. If they issued more tags the complaint would be "there are way too many people and we dont see any deer." I think Utah is still pretty liberal on deer tags.

I didnt put in at all. I wanted to see what they were going to do with the draw first. They only eleminated 500 tags. Not sure if that was managing the herds or not. For me I would like to know how many tags were issued in each unit. You can have the 30 units and say you are managing the herds, but did they add tags to some units, and take away from others or what? Maybe it was posted somewhere and I missed it. Yes it will help with the pressure in areas, but did it change the amount of tags that were issued in the surrounding areas of that unit?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-12 AT 10:37AM (MST)[p]We are still issuing almost twice the tags of certain neighboring states who micromanage. We did nothing more than reshuffle the deck.

I didn't draw...

But oh well I would hunt every other year if it meant better heard's and more exciting hunts. Besides there is always someone that I can help. I get almost as much satisfaction out of helping someone take an animal than carrying the weapon myself.

I don't know if 500 tags are going to make that much of a difference but at least it is one small step in the right direction.

It's kind of like going to Vegas and gambling for a couple days winning a bunch of money and on the last day throwing it down on the roulette table and betting on black and losing everything. (Go big or go Home)

Life was good because you were in Vegas and winning but when you decided to make that decision to go all in you ended up being a loser. Losing that which you already had and the fact that nobody likes to lose.

Just be happy that you got what you wanted you had a great weekend and didn't lose everything and possibly broke even.

You got what you wanted more units less tags better quality and
when reality sets in of what you could have had and you don't it hurts... But just until the next time you go to Vegas or put in for the draw!!!!

I can't complain too much cause I have a tag but I am sure there would be rumblings if I didn't. Probably just the human nature inside of me!!

Here's my definition of conservation;
Conservation is when the OTHER guy doesn't get a tag!

Like Justr_86 said, "it's real now"

System has changed. It will take a couple years just to have an idea of the new system.

It will take years to see if they can manage any of the 30 in a positive way.

I see this as a good first step.

However, taking the party size down is going to have an effect as you may not see many families having tags for everyone. Maybe split the family and half the people have a tag each year or just wait til everyone has multiple points and go in two or three groups.

It will take more thought to get it done.

>Plenty of left over primitive weapon
>tags you can buy over
>the counter

+1 learn a new unit if you wanna hunt that bad!

Several other states to hunt as well... Travel a bit if it means that much to you. I know I would try my best to do so.

Wow I thought by reading all of the posts this last year and this before the draw there would be no tags leftover and a bunch of people and youth wouldnt get an oppurtunity to hunt but it looks likes there are over a thousand tags remaining and some of those are any weapon tags.

Guess the sky isnt falling after all and people will still get to hunt that want to.

Simple. There were two arguments made when the DWR wanted to go to smaller units.

One group of people said they wouldn't get to hunt with their families any more. Most of these people are ok with shooting smaller deer. "It's all about the good times we had with our family." These people are more interested in the camp than the hunt.

The other group are mostly MM members. They are ok with giving up a year or so because they want to hunt bigger bucks and see fewer hunters.

Look at what the DWR did. They busted up the state into units they can manage except one. The Manti is a giant unit that spans almost one fifth of the state. The DWR can completely cop out on managing this unit because of it's size. Most units will see better numbers over the next few years but the Manti. They dumped a pile of tags into it to try to appease the family reunion hunters. Most of the state should be managed a little better.

Most people I know who put in for the Manti drew. Even some with their second choice. If you put in for the beaver, thousand lakes, or the pahvant etc. you were a little out of luck. Most of this is just a theory but if you look at the numbers it makes sense.
