Colorado Deer Hunt

I just received the news that we received our landowner voucher for Colorado 3rd season deer in units 71/711. I could be more excited. This will be my first hunt in Colorado. I've heard that this can be a good hunt all depending on the weather. I would like to make a scouting trip down there before the hunt. When would be the best time to scout that area? We want to check the private land that we have permission on but we would also like to check on the surrounding public lands. Any help or past experiences that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I actually like scouting during the season prior to what I have a tag for to find where the resident bucks are hunkered down with the pressure on them. Have to be sure of your surroundings if you find something worth getting a good look at (other hunters glassing) and be courteous to those actually hunting. Once the season split comes those deer will typically stay up feeding longer and you can get a better look at them without worrying as much about a ton of people on the unit watching you. Also gives you time to politely ask the hikers, joggers & bicyclist about what they see....sometimes best to pose as a photographer instead of a hunter when talking with them though.

I guided deer hunts out of there for three years, it's a lot of fun......just watch your PLO boundaries, it's really easy to get in trouble!!!

What was the quality of deer that you were seeing when you were out there? Ive heard both ends of the spectrum. What I have heard so far it sounds like a lot of fun.
