Nevada Area 16 - Late deer hunt

I have been studying my maps and now hoping to visit with someone who has hunted deer in these units during the late rifle hunt. It is my understandiong that the majority of the deer numbers are in the 161-162 Units. Nonetheless the eastern side (163-164)intrigues me as well. I am in search of something in the 180" class. My particular questions are for the Wildcat and Morey Peak areas, then over to the far side of Unit 164. What is the best access (east or west side)of these areas? Road conditions throughout the unit? I am also wondering how far I can take a full size truck on these roads or if I need to haul an ATV for more access. I am willing to backpack in for several days at a time if need be but wonder if this is even neccessary with the amount of roads. It is also my understanding that the Table MT and Mt Jefferson areas will get alot of the hunting pressure. I would prefer to be away from these crowds. I am not looking for any secret spots just general information to help me with the initial learning curve from anyone who has acutally spent time in these units.

Thank You,
JDHUNT

I have found that even if you have pressured areas, hike a half a mile from the road and you will find monsters. Here is the buck I got in 2010 during the late season in wallace canyon.

There's only a little over two dozen tags for the late hunt in those three areas. Doubt if you will see anyone.

velvetfvr,

nicely done... how's that road/trail in to wallace canyon? Wondering if I could get in there with a truck or if I would need to bring an atv? Water? Any running water in the small springs surrounding that area?

Thanks,

It is a forest service road and can go through the monitor range on that road with a semi hauling a trailer! It gets alot of pressure but this big guy knew how to elude all the road hunters but showed his face at the wrong time. I would bring a ATV so you can get into the mountain a little farther so then you can hike and find some secluded places. I ran into a couple hunters but not where I hunted. There are some monsters. There are several springs surrounding a little bowl on top where this dude was taken. Pm me if you want more info.
