Not looking for anybody secret spot or honey hole just looking to get pointed in the right direction. also what kinda caliber deer is on this unit should he hold out for a 200 inch deer or is that a little high. Thanks in advanced for any help.

200+ inches . . . you have probably set your sights a little too high.

Browning A-Bolt 300 Win Mag
Winchester Apex .50 Cal
Mathews Drenalin LD

It is easier to find poachers than it is to find 200 inch bucks out there. On the bright side, you dont need a tag for those. Take all you want

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Hey jtaylo,

I have the same tag..

I have heard mixed things about this tag, like the helpful people that have already posted. Lets stay in touch and maybe we can help each other out.

It's open season on poachers? Cool!

By the way, a 200" buck is the Holy Grail of deer hunting and he'd best lower his sights by about 20-30" (only my opinion). Good luck on the hunt. I hope your bro does well.

Thanks for all the input. I personally dont know much about this unit just trying to help him out as much as I can.

You are in for a very fun hunt there are some toads out there I seen the biggest bucks I have ever seen out there last year I would go look around red pine mountain always a few good ones there good luck

I heard that if you want a 3x4 they have some good mass to them. The average deer taken off the unit is 24" 4x4 with eye guards for that unit.

Vernon is the type of unit that offers alot of variety. If you want a 30" buck, you might be able to find ONE. If you want a heavy buck, you might be able to find ONE. If you want a 200" buck, you'd be damn lucky to find ONE.
If you'll be happy with a buck that has character and wall appeal then you're gonna have a fun hunt!

25", 170 class, fair mass, with a few cheaters is a realistic goal for Vernon.

If you hold out for 200 then you'll likely be eating tag soup.

that said, there seems to be one or two come out every year.
good luck!!!

Taken by the average hunter using his OHV handlebar as a rifle rest.

Hey don't set any goals until you go out there and see what there is. I have a Vernon Muzzy tag and have been out 3 times so far. I have seen alot of deer like what everyone is talking about, the 170-180 class with an occasional sticker. I also found a buck that will easily go 200 with a 4x5 frame and 5 extra cheaters. There are more big deer on the unit then people realize. Go out and see what there is and make your own goal, don't let anyone on here discourage you on your hunt.

I had the archery tag last year...had a blast spending lots of time on the unit scouting and hunting. Lots of bucks, and of course lots of dinks...but there are good deer on the unit, no question.

I'm not gonna guess what this buck might stretch the tape to, but it's safe to say the number would be fairly high...the Vernon holds big bucks, but they aren't around every bush.
