I need some help. I drew 102 and I have been pounding the area hard and havent turned up anything worthy.

Any help would be appreciated on some different areas to check out/ different tactics to find these bucks. I know theyre in there, but my efforts have turned up only 160ish bucks.

PM me please

My son drew the tag this year also and it seems we are having the same luck, sounds like to me that you found the big one though, I haven't even found one that big. Good Luck. I'm a little disappointed in the area, this will be the last time we hunt this area.

Unit 102 isnt the same unit it was 10-15 years ago. Not even close. yet it continues to receive a ton of hype, largely because of Huntin Fool. My guess is that the majority of the hunters will end up killing a 160 buck or less. Are there some big bucks still? yeah a few, just like there is in every unit, including general season units. There probably will be a handful of 190+ bucks killed this year, just like there will be in some of the general season units. Just because you draw a 102 tag doesnt mean you are going to see a 200" buck. With that being said, the rifle hunt is a new ball game and the deer seem to show up. Unit 102 isn't near as good as it once was, and I doubt it ever will be. You never know, you may get lucky. There seem to be a couple big bucks killed each year.

Welcome to the reality of 102.While big deer do exist there, the numbers of older bucks are pretty consistent with most general units.

Take the unit for what it is,and go have a good hunt.

Since your not finding any big bucks Go to the Elk 32 unit and tie a decent bull up for me please. I am to far to scout so will be heading out in sept with my bow for a couple weeks to give it a try. I hope to see a few good bulls(330 and up are great bulls to me.) Hope there is one out there with my initials on him.

Good luck on your deer hunt hope you find what your looking for.

I agree that its a tough area, but Im not going to settle for a mediocre deer.

Im local so I and have the time to spend in the unit. I am going to pound it until I kick up a shooter

Its been damn hot here so maybe I just need to change tactics. I know that there has to be some better bucks in some of the areas that I've been in.....I've been all over the unit already.

With all of the roads and the heat maybe the big boys are laying low until night??????

180 or I'll eat my tag. Please keep the suggestions coming.

If you have any areas in particular to try please PM me.

Thanks everyone

I think the number of deer is up from last summer.

Not that number represents bigger.

It has been hot---and pretty dang dry.

Try not to get dicourage and for sure try not to get stuck on 'Score' to have a great hunt.

With as much time and effort you are putting in--scouting and hiking all over heck, you are going to turn up a bruiser.

You bowhunting first?

The hard work will pay off in a great experience. that may not mean getting a monster buck, but the hunt will be a blast. I have only been up there a few times, the bigger bucks are always harder to find. Spend enough time there and you will see one that meet your expectations. Be sure and post up your pictures when you get him.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Hunt the last 5 days of the season. You will start to see more and hopefully bigger bucks as the rut getting close. Good Luck!!

If I wanted a 180 buck, I wouldnt settle either. If you are prepared to eat tag soup, thats a great outlook and approach. I wish more people who have their sights set on a 180" buck would not end up shooting a 150-160 buck on the last couple of days. If more people did that, maybe some of those young bucks with potential would grow up to be monsters someday. Good luck, hope you find what you are looking for.

lots of hunters, lots of area! Gone down hill and Hunting fools blown out all the draw odds ..Pine Mtn, Aspen Mtn get most of the attention, unless you hunted it a few times of scout your going to frustrate yourself..must of the big buck are going to killed the 1st light on openier.
I hunted it a bunch as a non resi.. everytime I did good but everytime it took longer to get me buck!
me I glass everything Hard..with great glass! ALL DAY!!!
RAIN=MUD!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-12 AT 03:57PM (MST)[p]+1,bonepiler.Shoot a mature 4+ yr old or nothing at all.Score isn't a good indicator of age.Shoot a mature buck 4+ or eat tag soup. It's actually not that bad once you get used to it.There are a number of older age class bucks there that don't have the genetics to reach 180,but are nonetheless fine trophies.

If a guy can't find what he wants as far as score,I sure wish more people would kill some of those old 6-7-8 yr old 3x4's and 3x3's that seem to be so prevalent there. You're getting a fine trophy while taking a bad gene out of the pool.

Good info from goatroper there,too.

On a side note, antler growth appears to be somewhat poor this year due to the drought we're having,at least in the areas I've been scouting here.
