This past weekend I drug the family out to the Books to check out the deer herd and to scout the area to see what it looks like. I have a rifle tag for out there and needed to go see what I was in for.

I am not sure what I expected but I had thought I would see more pine and aspens and not near the amount of oak brush, cedars and sage. Very neat area but not like what I pictured in my mind. We spent most days looking around the areas that hold deer during the rifle hunt but spent the evenings up on top looking at the deer. We saw some decent bucks, some good buck and a couple that made me shake a little. Doubt I'll see any of these bucks come time for the rifle hunt but they were fun to look at.

Any of you make it out there this past weekend? I talked to a couple guys who have the archery tag and some others who have the rifle tag like me.

Here are a few pics (very crappy I might add) of what we saw. I am no photographer so be kind!!

It was getting late but this buck was a toad in my mind. I don't know much about scoring nor do I care but this one would score high enough for me!!

Here's another one that looked awesome to me but by the time we got the camera on him he was done posing for us. These pics don't do him justice at all!!

Here are a few of the other bucks we saw. Nothing huge but fun to look at.

I'd be interested to know what you think this one scores as is and what you think he would score if he had 4 on each side. Beautiful buck though!!

It was a long drive but very fun. We plan to head out again toward the first part of September and hopefully will fit in another trip in October prior to my hunt.

Sorry the pics aren't that great but this post would be worthless without them!! :)

Nice, bucks! That first one is a toad for sure. I never saw anything close to that on my brother's muzzy elk hunt last year. Good luck!

I've been incredibly bummed that I won't be heading out there this year just to see what's out and about... Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I love the country out there. Wide open and lots of deer to be seen.

That first buck looks like a great trophy. As far as that 3x4, he is good lookin, but only about a 150" buck, maybe. With those eye guards, I hope he makes through this year and I can have a crack at him next year.

Post more of your other trips- thanks man..

Bonehead13,

Yes, I was on top with a blue 4-wheeler. We camped just off the top down South Canyon.

Yeah I thought that deer looked familiar, I met you up there we came to your camp. I got some good pics and video of that deer and a couple others.

Thanks for sharing those pics. That first buck looks like a toad even though it's blurry. Good luck on your hunt.

Looks like you located some potential shooters for opening day. That buck in the 1st pic is a hog. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-12 AT 08:19AM (MST)[p]I'm just one of many guys who have an Archery tag for the Books this year, thus far I've made it out there a couple of times to camp & scout for a few days at a time...I'll be going back out this weekend as well if the cards fall where they should. In regards to your photos, I'm pretty sure that the Buck in your first picture is one that I've had the pleasure of viewing through my scope a time or two now...really hoping that I can avoid his watch-dogs and get close enough to put an arrow through him. :)
