I have been scouting the NM unit that I have a deer tag for and was about to give up hope. Every rancher I talked to told me that they hadn't seen any deer for the last 2 years. I decided to go check out another spot recomended by someone on here and sure enough I spot 5 mule deer last night. Now will the mule deer hang around in the same areas if they are not pressured? I have always hunted whitetails and they are very patternable. I found a pretty secluded area that I spoted a few does in and thinking that it might be a good place for the rut. Should I hunt the secluded area and hope to spot a buck or try to locate a buck by just driving/walking and glassing?

Mule deer tend to move a bit but usually will stay within a region. They are not like eastern whitetails and will head for the next county if spooked. They don't have that courious come take a look attitude I have seen as patterns in some eastern whitetails.

Good that you have found an area with game. Sounds like the numbers will be low based on your post. This is late August and that doesn't mean your game will be at the same elevation come season opener, late September/October/November. I suggest talking to the local ranchers or better contact the F&G Biologist for your area and find out the deer trends and patterns to see when and where they go during your rutting season as well as where they usually wind up come Mid to late October.

They should stay within a general core area per the norm for that time of year, even if pressured. It is still a decent sized area when on foot.

I am looking at this season as a learning experience. this will be my first year chasing muleys. I am proud of myself for even spotting them laid up under the brush yesterday. If I even get a shot opertunity I will call that a success.
