My Dad and my son

Had a great time with my family on this hunt and learned that 9 days in the mountains with your 4 year old son is quite the adventure, but well worth it. After spending 9 days up there I realized that the 2 points I spent on this unit in 2001 was a bargain and had an opportunity at several quality bucks. The 8 points and 9 years of putting in this time felt like a bit of a rip off. In 2001 we would see between 20 to 40 4-points a day(have video to prove it)with a couple potential shooters seen each day. This year the 5 largest bucks we saw were 3-points and 2-points, of course the 2-points were ridiculous with one being over 30 wide and the other carring incredible mass from start to finish. In the end we saw less than 12 bucks with 4 points on each side or more. And more than half were young and small. Overall it was a fun hunt in a beautiful place, just not worth it to me to try and draw it a 3rd time. Guess its now time to play the Elk lottery.

Looks like you guys got after it. Congrats on a bunch of punched tags. I can't believe the gut on your deer. What did you find in there after you cleaned it, triplets?

Congrats to all of you. Looks like you guys had a great time out there. Good to see your son part of the fun.

Looks like a fun time had by all. Congrats to all you guys those are great deer. Its good to see you passing on the tradition to your son.

Going into the next year with 7 points, I have almost changed my mind on the Bookcliffs. After what everyone is saying and the deer they are showing I just can't decide. Looks like you had fun, but I would rather just hunt deer like that in my back yard. With 7 points, that don't really get you much of anything in Utah though.

BigPig,

Dad's & mine took dirt naps within 40 yards of a road. As for my cousins they had never boned out a deer in the field and chose to drag them out. Which would have been amusing to watch as they chose not to drag them by antler so not to damage the velvet. After some bone out in the field lessons in camp by me they shouldn't have to drag a whole deer out again. We actually cut up my Dad's where his picture was taken. Mine on the other hand actually expired ten feet from a road. So the 3 of us that were still there went back to camp since we found him after dark, grabbed the polaris ranger and loaded him whole so I could go back to camp and cut him up by lantern instead of head lamp. Much easier that way.

My deer contained no triplets, infact he was quartering towards me so my arrow took out a lung, the heart, and exited through the guts.

With a bow, Danny's buck is actually pretty decent... I'm sorry you didn't see more quality bucks like you wanted to... But I don't think you can trade the memories and experience of taking four bucks, with bows, with your son right there... it's a tough trade...

I agree on points. I now have 9 points and am putting in for rifle. I haven't killed a buck with my rifle in 8 years, and its my favorite time of year to hunt... The question is, do I keep going for the Books or not... Since I know the unit, I probably will. But Diamond Mtn is startin to look pretty good maybe... :D

Congrats and great job - it has been a tough bowhunt out on the book cliffs this year. Your experience matches that of some of my family members that have been hunting out there. They have not seen near the # of deer nor the size of bucks we have seen the past 5 or so years. The lack of water has spread the deer out and they are not as concentrated up on top as they normally are.

Good job filling your tags!

BrowningRage,

I had a great time and believe I am spoiling my son with the fact that his first two years hunting with me(last year & this year) I have filled my tag with him standing next to me watching it all.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-12 AT 01:58PM (MST)[p]Sounds like maybe they need to have som management hunts done there, and limit people to shooting a buck with only 2 points on one side?

Nice work though going 4 for 4.

Now that looks like a fun hunting trip. Congrats on all the bucks.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-01-12 AT 10:26PM (MST)[p]So I guess my pictures do not want to load. I am the guy who shot the 1st buck in this post. I had an awesome time and my 9 year old son was with me the whole time... nothing better than spending time in the field hunting with family. I had a new Hoyt carbon Element that my 13 year old son gave me just days before he passed away on June 1st of this year. Life is short ,enjoy the time you have with your children..

That is terrible, I'm truly sorry you had to go through that. Something no parent should have to do. I'm sure he was right by your side the whole time guiding
you into your buck and proud as he'll of you right now and forever to come. Congratulations a harvesting a great buck and for being an inspiration to us all!!
