Idaho Archery Buck

Shot this deer last night in Southern idaho. My buddy that was with me, and watched the whole thing unfold, typed up the story below. We had a great time. Not a monster like many on this website but my best buck to date.

Helped my buddy nail this guy last night. My buddy was given a land owners tag for spot north of Preston Idaho. We watched a number of deer on the property for most of the summer including one that we estimate scores slightly better than this one (you can see him in the picture titled ?stew?). But as hunting goes that deer disappeared after the opening day of the hunt and this deer that we have never seen showed up yesterday.

We spotted this guy yesterday feeding with a few other deer about 5:00pm. When we saw him be both looked at each other and said ?he's a shooter? and began planning how to get him. The deer bedded down about 5:30 in a perfect spot for my friend to sneak in without being seen as long as the wind would hold. So Brady (my friend) set out to put the stalk on and I stayed back to guide him in with hand signals. Around the time he closed the distance to about 150 yds they all stood up and looked in his direction, at this moment I glanced back at Brady and saw the white powder from his windicator blowing directly toward them?. It didn't take them long to make their way out of sight of the both of us. Having given up on the deer we met back up and moved to a new location to glass some areas we had seen deer earlier in the summer.

The new location allowed us to see the whole property so it didn't take long before I located the buck in a group of about 15 deer. Ironically he was moving directly toward where Brady and I were sitting when we found him earlier in the day. At this point it is just after 8:00 and the light is fading fast so Brady just said ?there is no way I can get there in time.? I agreed given that the deer were close to 1200 yds away. I was about to say ?we'll just come back tomorrow we know where he beds and where he moves to at night? when out of the corner of my eye I saw Brady dropping all his gear. I looked at him and he said ?I'm going for it?. He started running while I kept an eye on the deer. I wasn?t paying much attention to which way he went so I lost track of where he was until I saw him sneak into field of view of the spotting scope. Just as he got within my view I saw two deer peg his location and I thought, well he gave it a good shot but it's over now. By some stroke of luck the majority of the deer including the big buck kept feeding and 10-15 seconds later I saw Brady draw his bow.

I focused on the deer and all at once they scattered. It was dark enough I couldn't make out details on the antlers so I just followed the main pack not knowing which one he had shot. After about 50 yds one of them looked like it was slightly limping as it ran so I followed him. Another 50 yds and he couldn't keep up with the pack so he dove under a juniper tree and never came out. I assumed he was hit but had no way of knowing so I packed up our gear and headed out to meet up with Brady. When we met up he looked at me and said ?did he go down?? I responded ?did you hit him?? He said I left my range finder in my bag so I had to guess the range! I put my 60 yd pin at the top of his back and heard a loud whack! I said well then he is dead by that tree and we both new at that point he had shot his biggest buck yet. We decided to give the deer some time just in case and find the arrow. It only took us a few minutes to find it and we both smiled when we saw the fletchings covered in blood. We made our way down to the tree where I had last saw him and there he lay. Brady had gone into ?Moss Mode? and pin wheeled this deer from 65 yds with no range finder.

Hope you enjoyed the story, it was a blast watching it all unfold through the spotting scope. Good luck to all you bow hunters!

That is a great buck. Sounds like you guys had an awesome hunt and made it happen. Who said Idaho doesnt have good deer? Great story and pics. Congrats.

Thanks guys I appreciate the kind remarks. I couldn't have done it without my good buddy Ben. Nothing like chasing a big buck with a bow!

Very nice Idaho Buck, hope the rest of your season goes as well as this hunt did.
