You got me! Haha, cool post and way to go on taking your boy out with you. Good to see dads spending time with their boys in the hills.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-12 AT 08:46AM (MST)[p]Ya we had a great time up there. Did some hunting and made some dams in the creek and what not. I had some great plans to get back in a spot where bigger bucks like to hang out but my son left his shoes at his grandparents house on our way up so all he had was his flipflops! Not good for hiking in! I didnt want to drive all the way back down and back up for the short amount of time we had to hunt anyway so we hunted close to camp where he could walk on the road and at that point decided Id shoot whatever buck we saw considering the circumstances.

On our walk back to camp there was a small herd of deer 24 yards away from my pickup so I shot the buck from 407 yards (ranged it) but he was only 24 yards from the truck. Never had that happen before.

I did make the headache rack from 1/4" thick steel. Its pretty heavy duty.

Yes he was happy. I remember my first buck which was a 19" wide fork horn and I was more excited about that deer than Ive ever been with all the 4 and 5 point type deer Ive gotten since. I still love getting a deer but that first buck was a trophy to me, man I was excited. That was like 20+ bucks ago and is still by far one of the most exciting hunts of my life. Im sure when my son gets to carry a rifle and actually be the shooter he will be just as excited. How big were all of your guys' first buck?

High Mountain Muley. I chased him all day. Was a forky with huge ears, but man, was that a rush!

Hey Josh, funny who you run into on the internet. That looks alot like my first deer. It hangs in my boys' bedroom on a plaque and we call it the monster buck to this day. Awesome memories!

I wish I could have you make some gates for me. I follow your facebook page and you do some really awesome work!! If I ever make it up there I'll look you and Grover and Porter up! Take care. NZAM Rules!
