Norther Utah buck massacre

Once these storms in northern Utah get done dumping snow and the skys clear this weekend, bucks big and small are going to get massacred as they move to lower ground and have to work harder for food!! Its almost an unfair avantage for hunters, but let's see the pics.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. What do the deer do with all the snow and why does it make is so easy for hunters? Havent hunted a lot in snow.

It's so much easier because you can track the animals. If you find tracks you can follow them, if you miss a shot, you can follow the animal, if you wound a buck you can track the blood easily, you can scout and see where the deer are just by looking at the numbers of tracks in an area, etc. It makes it way, way easier if you know how to take advantage of it.

This is another side benefit to the 29 unit structure. There are only a limited number of hunters (high number, but still limited) in these units with lots of snow. Now guys from the adjacent areas without much snow can't suddenly switch areas and descend on the areas with lots of snow. This will help keep a true "massacre" from occurring.

Thats a good point llamapacker. That should help.
Huntinguy, We got around 12 inches of snow today where I live, I imagine the mountains above our town recieved at least double or more. I'm guessing the mountains got anywhere from 24-30 inches. With that much snow, all the deer, even the big 'ol smart bucks will likely start moving around a lot more to find feed, so these bucks that you might never see during a normal weather pattern become easier to find and shoot. If the snow is bad enough it could cause them to abandon the high country all together and head for lower ground walking right into the masses of hunters. This happened in 2004, I think it was, and I have never seen so many big bucks killed down in the lower country.

Backpackin-

Yeah I seem to remember hearing about the '04 snow year hunt and how good it was. Having not hunted that much snow I was just wondering what makes it so great to hunt in. All your points totally make sense. Do the deer just congregate down in the fields or what? What unit do you live in? Curious to see the results.

Thanks

Deerlove, Is that what happened? I heard about that, a couple of guys that I know bought tags just before the hunt. WTF! No wonder our deer situation is poor. I think that is poor management. What was the motivation for that? More money for the dwr?

I heard there were approximatley 463 tags left for unit 4,5,6 with three days till the rifle opener. The gal at the main office said the left over licenses for the archery are available to the muzzle loader folks up until the hunt..then the tags that are left over from the muzzy hunt are then become available to the rifle hunters...
