Big deer in utah, why?

I have been reading alot of posts here and on other websites talking about all the big deer shot here in Utah. let me assure you that this year was definitely an above average year. it was not because of the management plan set in motion this year. and it is most certainly not because there are just monsters wandering the hills here. with a little wildlife research you will find some important information that could help you.

i have been a pretty avid muley hunter since i was old enough to walk. (those who know me would agree) there are multiple reasons why the deer were so big this year in utah. first off, spring of 2011 was one of the wettest springs regionally in a long while. Wet spring equals lots of vegetation growth meaning plenty of good feed for the wildlife. second factor; winter of 2011 (dec 2011-feb 2012)was one of the mildest winters we had in a long time. less snow equals more access to vegetation growth from the previous spring, which in this case was in abundance. overall meaning the deer had one of the easiest winters to date. easy winter=healthy deer. healthy deer = good antler growth for the upcoming year. We may have had a solid drought year but. the time of year deer are scrounging for vegetation is when its covered in snow during the winter. they will find vegetation during the spring and summer of drought years just fine. its the following winter range that is effected by a drought. Another major factor to this being an amazing year for hunting was the plethora of snowfall during the actual hunt. lots of snow will push deer out of their normal patterns and bring them down lower in elevation where there are more hunters. as well as the combination of cold and snow that triggers pre rut doe chasing. this causes alot of bucks to go into "rutting mode" rather than there normal hide and be safe sitting. in short. God couldn't have planned out the seasons better to provide us with such an optimal year for big deer. Now, due to the harsh drought, if we do end up having a bad winter this year, antler growth will suffer and we will be seeing alot less growth next year. the real secret. follow weather patterns from the previous year and you will see a greater average in deer size in light winter areas

last years harvested deer are not a good comparison on where to hunt the following year. I have heard multiple people talking about going hunting next year in the areas they have seen pictures of a big buck shot. this makes me giggle. every year is different. you wont find the same huge buck in the same draw year after year. many of you already know this. others who see pictures of big deer and plan on hunting that same spot the following year, save yourself the hassle, he wont be there he's already dead.

You just spent three paragraphs explaining that this years performance in no way will be correlated to next years harvest. So why then would anyone give a rats tail if someone wandered into these spent honey holes?

Doesn't matter where someone goes hunting, especially if it is on public, they will be 'trespassing' on someones area. This thread makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine. I seriously doubt anyone who manages to get a decent buck anywhere pioneered their way into an undiscovered virgin areas without any help, research, or mimiced behavior of those who had previously been successful.

I'm convinced! I will not hunt where you killed your big one this year.

There were several really nice bucks killed this year.... as there are every year. I seriously doubt that very many folks will jump away from "their" unit to hunt "yours". Some movement always happens and we'll see a bit of it next year too.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-12 AT 02:52PM (MST)[p] This post wasnt about telling people to stay out of someones area. this was me shaking my head at people stating they were going to go to the spots big deer were shot next year. or people stating that the big deer shot this year came from the new unit management. it was simply a little education to those who obviously dont understand these few concepts about hunting. relax. if you already know this then good for you, this message doesn't apply to you. Im simply giving out a little education to those who may be newer to hunting or don't understand these concepts.

My good hell Trevor, people who spend any sort of time on this website are not 1st timers, once again your steam shovel mouth has overloaded your canary ass! And yeah I'm being a prick this time.

While I enjoyed your take on why there have been several large bucks taken in Utah this year and I am sure there is some merit to it I found the post as a whole hard to take serious.

Your credentials as a "obsessive deer watcher" and the use of scientific terms such as "stupid mode" gave me a good laugh though!

Hope nobody ends up in your secret spot next year.

Its lonely at the top...

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-12 AT 03:38PM (MST)[p]lance your always a prick. and you are one to talk about "steam shovel mouth" (stay the hell out of MY area) yeah still have that specific text from you on my phone lol. your pathetic
shall we go on about how you told me you were going to go cut down any tree in the forest that had a treestand in it and go smash all my trail cameras. you sure are one positive guy. i would like my trail camera back when you get around to it buddy

I'm not shiiting you, I actually like this guy. He at least has "A" thought and some skin AND he killed a sweet buck this year!

My comment was strickly tongue and cheek, but based upon your other posts I think you need to have some thicker skin before you put your posts on here.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-12 AT 05:28PM (MST)[p]I find this post interesting. How would a wet spring in 2011 have anything to do with horn growth in 2012? You also failed to mention the shortened season we had two years ago that allowed more bucks to survive. Most of the big bucks that have been killed this year probably are al least 5 yr old bucks. These bucks normally would have been shot when they were 3 or 4. Yes the weather had a lot to do with it but there were huge deer shot opening weekend without snow. The two main keys are shortened season in past years and mild winters.

oh what the hell ,,,,,, >>>>hunting was the plethora of snowfall during the actual hunt. <<<<<

psstttt it didnt snow ANY at all where i was on the manti just saying

that is definitely another factor i didn't mention. two seasons ago the hunt was a short 3 day hunt and it rained hard with high cloud cover the whole hunt. read the main post again. the reason spring of 2011 was mentioned is it was an extremely wet year causing a ton of vegetation growth that lasted through the new year of 2012. meaning better winter feed through the winter of 2012.

Sound advice!
So, I ask that each of you post photos of deer that did not get killed and what unit you saw them in.
That will allow me to switch to a unit that the deer are still alive. Problems solved.
Or, next year, If I see that big bucks are consistently getting killed in a certain unit, I will switch to that unit...one year does not a trend make.

So, here is where I saw big mule deer, the day the season closed or shortly after.
Unit 16, 21, 1, 5, and 23.

Please the rest of you, post the same. :)

I agree with trophymuley this is a great year 4 antler growth ,I have seen many above average bucks this year , I have spent 4 days a week on the mountain- not road hunting -putting boots on dirt , Deer numbers are still down, way down from a decade ago it looks like to me .,hunt hard have some luck get a good buck , PS I love mule deer & America...

Doesn't age play some part in antler size..?? Seems like I must have read that on someone else's post about not hunting in their area... :D
