Someone shot my son.

I want to tell you all about our third season hunt near Craig colorado starting last Saturday. We had purchased some land owner tags to hunt private property. My 38yr old son (Tyler) had arranged this hunt a year in advance, and we were looking forward to having a great time. We camped near a barn at the ranch, then Saturday morning we started to drive up the county road, my son Ty was in front on a four wheeler, and my nephew Jon with me in a Polaris Ranger. We then turned off this road onto another county road, which had to travel thru a couple of miles of public ground, before reaching the private. We were seeing numerous trucks and hunters on the outskirts of where we were driving 300 to 400 yds. We were seeing deer everywhere. My son Ty was standing up on the four wheeler, fully clothed in orange, as well as we were, when we heard a shot, it hit my boy halfway between the elbow and his wrist, I don't need to tell any of you what it looked like. In seconds we thru a belt around his bicep to stop him from bleeding to death, and headed for craig as fast as possible. The Sheriff has rounded it down to two trucks, that were dead ahead of us. My son had a gun scabbard cross wise on the front of the 4x4, the bullet had traveled thru it and then his arm. If he had been sitting down, it would have gone thru his shoulder. I know none of you know us, but could you keep him in your prayers. Many operations to reconstruct. Be careful all. Know your target and whats beyond.

Damn sure Prayers on the way!

Hope He makes a Full Recovery!

Sure Hate to hear about these kinds of things!

God Bless!

Hello Mr. Wisz,This is the UDWR Calling....LMMFAO!

GOOD GAWD A MIGHTY!

So sorry to hear that. This must be everyones worst nightmare. I hope your sons arm heals well and hope they nail the guy. I'm sure a lot of guys here will remember your son in their prayers.

Holy crap! I am really glad you where there to take action fast, if something like this happens to a guy alone. Sometimes the brain re-acts strangely and it doesn't end good. Wow! Yup got him in my prayers, right before I give thanks for you being there also!

My god, people are sick!! Hopefully they catch and prosecute the jack off/s that did it!
You never know when you might piss off some crazy idiot bad enough to shoot you, even if your just minding your own business.

I hope your boy has a full and speedy recovery!

Very sorry for you guys. Hope he heals quickly and so glad it didnt hit him in a worse spot. This is bad enough. Keep us posted!

Hope it goes well and hopefully they hammer the careless idiot who did this.

I am sorry to hear about your son. I hope that he heals well and that you may have many more experiences in the future that never turn out like this. He and the whole family will be in our prayers.

Who the #*## shoots at people, let alone a kid?

Things like this are never accidents because accidents can not be prevented....(that's why they are called accidents)

A situation like this is a complete disregard for life and a young boys future.

Your son will have one helluva story and scar. Good luck to him and good job on your part with the fast acting and quick thinking.

unreal just read this in craigs local newspaper and pray for full recovery and that the idiots that did the shooting pay dearly

Best wishes and prayers for a positive outcome. It is sad that we must have such tragic reminders of the need to never fudge on sound safety practices in the field. It is just NEVER EVER worth it to take that skyline shot, or any shot where you cannot be positive of your backdrop and surroundings. I certainly hope this was just this type of situation and not something malicious. Either way, the outcome was the same and now somebody has to pay a hefty price. Thank God it is not life threatening. Launching a missile from a center fire rifle is a huge responsibility. THINK PEOPLE!!

That is devistating news. Thankyou for sharing this with the MM hunting family. I wish your son the best in his recovery.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-12 AT 05:42AM (MST)[p]They have some pretty good guys on the Sheriffs office in Craig. I'm sure there get to the bottom of it. Hopefully it was just a bad accident and not someone purposely shooting at your son.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-12 AT 08:15AM (MST)[p]Yikes. That is very scary. I hope all goes as well as we can hope for your kid! Hard to fathom someone doing it on purpose but, it can be a sick world sometimes. Wonder if there's a chance someone was using his scope to view your son? Heaven knows there's plenty of those idiots out there. Whatever the case, first and foremost, I wish your son a successful recovery.

Hope all is giong well for him and yours... Prayers and good thoughts are coming your way...

Sending prayers and best wishes to your son on a full recovery.

Those type of F*cktards are going to ruin it for everyone !!!!

You have our prayers!
So sorry to hear about your son. I hope he makes a FULL recovery.

Zeke

PS: Be careful out there guys. It only take a split second to do the wrong thing but it takes careful planning to do things right.

Sorry to hear about your Son. PM me if you want some advise on hand surgeons or therapy in Utah. I have been a hand therapist for 25 years and have worked with a lot of the best surgeons and therapist in the state.

Best of luck,

Greg

Prayers are sent. Sorry to hear about such an unfortunate thing. I hope he has a full and speedy recovery.

I hope your son has a full reovery. I pray for him, and I pray justice will be done to whom ever did this to him as well. Like said before, thank goodness you were right there to help take care of him! Sad deal.

Ty just arrived in Salt Lake City, he flew in from Grand Junction Colorado. He is now at the U of U hospital. He is stable, no infection. He sent us a picture of the book cliffs from the air plane. He always could spot a long ways away.

Prayers are on the way. I hope he has a quick recovery. Thank you for the heads up too, its easy to forget hows dangerous our sport can be and how quickly an enjoyable hunt can become a tragic event. Being careful and responsible and knowing what is behindyour target is a good message for all of us.

Our thoughts and Prayers to your son. Wish your son a speedy recovery. Hope they catch the Ba$tard that shot him.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank God it wasn't in a more vital area.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-12 AT 08:09PM (MST)[p]Tyler is my best bud and a life long friend. It sickens me that this happened to him. I was in Meeker, CO hunting elk when Dan ( justachipshot) made the call that stopped my heart Saturday morning. Everything changed that morning!

So glad that prayers are being answered and Ty is recovering with help from some great and qualified doctors. Ty has a beautiful family, a sweet wife, two kids and one more on the way due in December. A great man and hate to see him laid up. One of the hardest working guys I know as well.

Here is a picture just a week before this terrible event. Ty and I set out and in typical fashion has some great fun and success. Ty then helped me pack this buck off the Wasatch Front.

If anyone has info or perhaps heard or witnessed something, please, please contact the Sheriffs office in Craig. we need careless hunters held accountable here. This never should have happened!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-12 AT 08:45PM (MST)[p]Dan thanks for keeping us informed with how Ty is doing. Tell him we are praying for him! I miss seeing you guys on the mountian in UT.

I met your son Tyler a couple of months ago at a dinner event in SLC. He seems like a great guy with a passion for hunting. I hope they find the guy that shot and bailed, and throw the book at him. Intentional or not, there is no way this guy would be unaware of what he did.

I wish Tyler a speedy and effective recovery. Keep us posted with any updates.

Ryan

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. Let him and the rest of the family that a lot of hope and faith is being exercised on Ty's behalf.

Thanks to BUL_KRZY, he dropped his elk hunt saturday, drove from Meeker Colo. Picked up our camp,in Craig, fixed Tylers truck, and drove it down to the hospital in Grand Junction. This made it so the family could be with Ty and not to have to worry about the camp. Paul and Tyler are true friends. Thanks to Paul and his hunting companions.

srry to hear that. prayers for your son and you. those are the type of people who give the rest of us a bad name

Sad this had to even happen!BUT thankfully your son is ALIVE. I have been a Hunter Safety Instructor for over 25 years. Sadly, I have pages full of AVOIDABLE incidents such as this I share every year with students (most all of them youth)...just trying to stress HOW GRAVELY IMPORTANT the things we are learning in the classroom NEED to translate to hunting afield. Prayers for your son and all your family, and hoping for a FULL recovery. May God bless.

We all don't want to really think about the trust we have to put in others carrying weapons when we are out enjoying a hunt with family or friends. And sad at how someones careless actions have the possibility of taking so much from others. Best of luck with your sons recovery.

Glad things are going good for him right now, I hope they find out who did it. Prayers for a fast and complete recovery.

It was my great pleasure to get know Tyler this year when he was helping me with my Henry's hunt....a better guy is hard to find. Please keep us informed.

Hey justachipshot, I am the one you meet in wal-mart in craig the night before. Sorry to hear about your son hope he is doing all right, hope everything goes good for him from here on out.

Wish him the very best in a speedy recovery. He is one of the most talented and gifted shooters that I know. I hope his love of hunting and the mountains will not be destroyed because of what I hope was an accident.

It's good to here he is recovering !
Was it a careless hunter ? A ricochet ? Or someone just flat out shooting at him . I cant believe this could happen . A man standing on top of his wheeler getting shot on the road. What kind of damage did his arm receive . Did it break the bone?
Sorry for all of the question. But I just cant imagine how someone could shoot someone like this. Its a scary thing to think about .
Our prayers are with him to make a fast recovery !!

No words can say enough!!! Hope all go's well and a full recovery. This is everyone's worst nightmare. Glad he was not alone and you did what was needed and got him to town.

Unbelievable....I can't understand how things like this happen. Prayers sent.

Steve
Hell, it's bigger than anything BESS has killed.

Prayers with you guys for sure. I hope he makes a full recovery. It definitely could be worse but I am thankful he is okay. It has been a rough year in the hunting community when you include all the PH's and others killed in Africa while hunting. Thoughts and prayers to all put in harms way this year.

Man, this makes me sick. I started reading through this post and couldn't believe it was one of my college friends who had been shot. What a horrible thing to happen to such a great guy. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ty and his family.

As many of you know on here, I do not ask for too much, but this time I am hoping for your help.

In an effort to help a good friend--ya that is you Tyler. I got a little something special coming up tomorrow morning at 8:45am on 97.1 ZHT...

The Morning Zoo is going to do a special on Hunting Accidents featuring Tyler and his story. I too had a close encounter this year, but mine turned out much differently.

The idea is to get the word out there about being careful and knowing what is behind your target when shooting, as well as, to help out Tyler! Many do not know that he is also expecting his 3rd kid in December and with the increasing medical bills---well he could use all of our help. His Sister and Dad are setting up an account that everyone can donate if they feel like it. There will be a link on the Zoo page tomorrow and announced on the air.

We have all had the close call, but for him it turned out bad. We are VERY happy he is around to grace our campfires so if you can spare a bit--throw it in the pot.

A SPECIAL thanks goes out to my buddy Frankie and 97.1 ZHT for helping out a friend and more importantly trying to increase awareness. You guys rock and can not say enough about the whole crew!!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-12 AT 09:49PM (MST)[p]This seems like a glassing to look through rifle scope accident. Very trajic!!!

Always take your binoculars hunting and use them to glass and never use your rifle scope to look at something you dont intend to shoot. NEVER!!! .....Dont ever consider it even if you know its unloaded..... ALWAYS practice good muzzle control and always be aware of whats behind what you intend to shoot. NEVER rely on the safety mechanism of your firearm!!! Be responsible!!!

Muzzle control, muzzle control, muzzle control!!!

Keep it pointed down, keep it in a safe direction

Ok we got all our ducks in a row (takes more time to set up a donation account than one might think).

Here is a blog link------http://www.tylerrastrecovery.blogspot.com/

And if anyone wants to help out they can stop by any Wells Fargo Bank and donate under Tyler Rast Donation Account.

The family would like to thank everyone!
