LAST EDITED ON Nov-09-12 AT 10:54?PM (MST)

Its been a week come 8am in the morning, when Ty was shot by some idiot hunter. Three surgeries in six days. Starting reconstruction monday. He has many friends, including those on MM. lets hope for a great recovery, so he can get back to what he loves. We've got a long way to go. Thanks everyone.

Well glad he is in good hands, sounds like it may be a while before he is hunt shape, but hunting gives him good reason to get back in shape! Any idea on whom did it?

I have no doubt Tyler will make a full recovery and in time will be able to return to what he loves.
My best to this courageous young man and to his family. God Bless.

Do they have any expectations of what they think the long term goal will be as far as what percent of normal use he will have? I hope and pray for his well being.

They have not really said, He can move his fingers, and has feeling, alot of muscle just gone. He is missing about 6in of bone, they will take some bone from his leg. As well as some muscle. He will be in surgery all day monday they said. Pretty extensive rebuild.

Most of us can't imagine what a gun shot wound would look like. I was thinking it could be just a little hole in and out the other side. Like a flesh wound. But it sounds a lot worse when you say 6 " of bone loss. Sounds good that he has feeling and movement. Hope his recovery continues.

Horrible. I just couldn't imagine. Keep the man focused on his recovery.

A few short years ago, they would've amputated his arm the day of. Surgeons can do some amazing things and the body's ability to rebuild and heal has to be one of the great wonders of the world. As long has his immune system is strong and he mends well, the prognosis should be good. In the upper arm they generally place a rod in to stabilize it as the bone regenerates. In the lower arm, I think they generally go with a plate. It will be a long haul and likely he'll have some limits with scar tissue and what not, but he may end up with remarkably few long term effects. Thanks for up dating us and continued best wishes.

Bad deal. What a fluke thing. Hope he has a speedy recovery. Glad that it wasn't worse.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

Dan glad to hear things are going as good as they are. Been keeping up on Tyler with Jed and i am looking forward to rifle golf with the both of you again next year... You guys are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hunters getting shot makes me sick to the stomach. When I was young I helped pack out a guy who shot himself in the foot. That was traumatic for me, but obviously not near as bad as it was for you to see your son being shot by someone else.
My son-in-law was apparently one of the trauma surgeons to help your son. He just moved to Grand Junction a couple of months ago, with 7 years of experience treating gun shot wounds back east. (not hunting wounds) Hopefully with all the new technology now available, your son will make a full recovery. We pray that that will be the case.
Perhaps one challenge will be mentally overcoming that awful experience and ever wanting to go hunting again. God bless all of you for a full recovery.

I hope everything goes well, and tyler has a full recovery. Has the local law enforcement been able to identify the person who shot Ty?

No new leads for law enforcement. But we are asking all on this site, to report anything heard about someone shooting near or at another hunter in the field. Ty was shot off his 4 wheeler, driving down a county road 20 miles North East of Craig Colorado. Someone knows something, and its up to all of us to make our sport as safe as possible. Yes their are inherant dangers, but this situation was completely avoidable. So, we are asking that any information be reported to the Moffat County Sheriffs dept, in Craig Colorado. This could have happened to you or your young son, so lets get this guy. You can also contact myself on this site. You will remain anonymous.

WOW! I just got back from 2 weeks in Colorado and just saw this post.

I hope this man makes a good recovery. I also hope that this was NOT an intentional shot.

That said, I have to comment about the safety issue. This year, we had WAY more hunters in our unit than I have ever seen and while sitting on my spotting scope, I clearly saw 3 seperate guys looking at other hunters......and me.... thru their rifle scopes. That is VERY unnerving!.....and pisses me off.

Fortunately, they were too far for me to confront them about it.

I have a nephew, who hit a woman sitting in a deer camp almost one half mile from where he shot at a deer on a ridge line. She was not injured but the bullet hit her in the hip and fell to the ground. Had it hit her in the eye........

He was not cited, but it sure wrecked his season.

I personally killed a cow elk bedded down in some brush, 20 yards behind the bull that my '06 passed thru and glanced off a rock. I had no idea that she was there. Scary......it could have been another hunter at a hundred yards. (Don't ask......that end of THAT event is a whole other story!)

"I could agree with you, but then we would both be
wrong......and stupid"

My thoughts and prayers are with Tyler and his family. A tragedy like this is so sad. Whe you can keep us informed on how he is. Take care and God Bless!

Prayers are with your son and your family.
Cannot believe nobody has any leads on this. I hope the guy gets whats coming to him, but then again he will pay ultimatley in the end.
Best,
Jerry

I think you need to post a reward for information on who shot him. Maybe that would put some pressure on the police to do their job. Just a thought. Be relentless. Best wishes to Tyler.

That's terrible to hear. Hope he makes a speedy recovery. As for the person who shot him... Hope he/she gets caught and faces stiff charges for their actions.
We were hunting the Idaho deer hunt this year and while we were glassing up on a ridge top (next to our rzr) we had several guys whizz bullets past our heads. One of the scariest things I've ever experienced. Hearing the crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier right next to you... They were shooting at some does that we couldn't see below us. 20+ shots and the does escaped unharmed. Needless to say I was extremely pissed off and it got dark before we had a chance to confront the guys and kids.

I was thinking of this today. I was just wondering how Tyler is doing? Also wondering if any progress had been made in catchin the people responsible for him getting shot?

Don't be afraid to live for fear of dieing.

Thanks for asking horsehunter. I told tyler yesterday, that he needs to get on MM and tell his story and show a few pics of his arm before surgery and after. It was a devastating wound, but he is on the mend. It will take a year or two, but he will be back. The surgeons took the fibula out of his lower left leg, along with the muscle attached to it, and transplanted it into his arm. Miracles do happen at the U of U medical center. The sheriffs dept in craig found a shell casing, of which they think was the one used to wound Ty. 7mm Mag. No one has come forward. A sizable reward has been registered with the Craig Colorado Police Dept.
