Howdy,
This is my first hunt report and I will try and give credit where it is due. I killed this buck the last day of the first New Mexico rifle season November 7, 2012. This was a guided hunt provided by Beaverhead Outfitters. This area is not known for producing giant bucks but it is in my price range of what I can afford, plus I had done this hunt two years ago and killed a better than average buck. Charles was my guide for the first four days of the season. On the last day I decided to settle for my "back pocket buck" and we went to go find him. He was a very large old three point that I had passed on day one. John accompanied us to help us find the deer on the last day. We went to the area we had seen him before and John spotted him but instead of being alone he had 10 other bucks with him now, Including a very nice 170 class 4 point and a monsterous old buck with stickers. At close to a thousand meters the old deer spotted us and snuck away from the group of bucks and over a saddle between two mountians. John said he knew there was some very nasty country where that deer had slipped into but he had never been in there personaly. In fact he didn't know if any of his guides had ever hiked in there. We decided to pull back and get some help. We went to camp and located Randy the ranch foreman and another deer guide that works for Beaverhead. He has lived on the property for 34 years and stated he had been in the canyon but only three times. He said it would be a difficult approach but possible. My brother drove me charles and Randy to the front of the property and dropped us off for our approach. He then snuck back into the saddle with his spotting scope to watch the show. Me Randy and charles climbed the big mountian, came over the top and entered the south east side of the bowl. We then slowly approached the south bluffs of the box canyon. Very slowly we would move closer to the edge while stopping and glassing below us. Finaly I spotted him in the very bottom and amazingly he was not hiding but up and feeding at close to 1:00 pm. I guess he felt totally secure in his hide away. I layed down on the edge of the bluffs and tipped him over with one good shot. The spot was so nasty it took forty minutes just to climb down to him. Then we had to cut him into pieces and carry him out. He was the largest bodied deer I have ever personaly seen and he is my best antlered deer so far. I would like to thank the guides of Beaverhead outfitters and my brother for all of their help.
