I wanted to share my story with all of you. On the 8th day of my archery hunt in Idaho I was sneaking in on a buck of a lifetime. At 50 yards I readied myself for a shot on the unsuspecting buck. What happened next blew me away. A mountain lion snuck in and jumped on the buck and took him to the ground. The big bodied buck was able to get away and ran right towards me with the lion hot on his heels. At 30 yards I drew my bow and held my ground. The lion stopped shortly after but the buck kept coming full speed. Just when I thought he was going to run me over, the buck jumped right over me and landed some 4 or 5 yards behind me. I quickly spun around and for some reason the buck paused just long enough for me to get a shot off. I then checked my back trail to make sure the lion wasnt coming next. I couldnt see the lion but was later informed that the lion just sat down in the brush and watched as I tracked my deer. When we found my buck we were blown away. He is 33 1/4 inches wide with tons of mass. I havent scored him yet and dont plan to for some time. He is a awesome animal no matter what the "score"is...check out the photo of the buck laying on the ground. you can see the lion scratches in his back. pretty cool stuff.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer? See Zeke for prime example....

That's a great deer. The story is even better and WOULD INDEED be unbelievable....if you didn't have a big dead deer.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Truth definitely is stranger than fiction!!! Wow. What a story and what an experience! Normally I would just pass something like this off as one of those made up and embellished hunting stories that we all have heard.......but I am buying into this one! And for the record, i would have paid top dollar to watch that whole thing go down. Thanks for sharing!! And congrats on one heck of a buck! Kip

I can't even keep my composure under a normal stalk/shooting situation. Can't imagine seeing this whole thing go down and still get the perfect shot off. Way to go! That lion is a trophy hunter. Too bad you couldn't take him out of the equasion too.

I'm glad you posted this here I read your story in muley crazy, what an amazing experience!! The way I understood your article in the magazine was that you got it all on film. If so, is there anyway we can watch it? I would love to see something like that unfold especially on a true giant deer, congrats on your success as well as coming out unharmed.

elkun will be pissed to see the dead deer!

Wisz was a Hell of a Sport this year even if He did tell the UDWR to F-Off during the Phone Call!:D
15" Bases?
30" 5ths?
Missing 450" Bull!
The next 4 years is Slicks Fault, again,GEEZUS!
GOOD GAWD A MIGHTY!

My brother in law Dusty saw the whole thing unfold. still to this day every time we see each other he still pats me down to make sure I am still alive. Needless to say I am glad he was there to witness it, otherwise I may hav been diagnosed with heat stroke and accused of telling "fish stories" :)

WOW that is a GREAT STORY and EXPERIENCE of a lifetime. My hat is off to you..:) The RUSH must have been tremendous..Plus that is such an awesome buck..I agree maybe the lion should get an assist :) Be glad he didn't stick around for dinner :)

Thanks for sharing..That is the best hunting experience I have ever read posted on MM. Puts one on the edge of your chair just reading your story...Especially if one has also encounted lions up close and personal while hunting...Mostly those lions blow your hunt or stalk for you. Glad you were able to close the deal and stick that buck with all that was going on..Just incredible you still were able to get such an awesome buck. I wonder why the buck even stopped? A buck like that one knows better. The buck also must have been effected some by his near death encounter with that lion... just to stop again with that lion so close behind on his six.

To be honest the buck didnt come to a complete stop, but he did pause and look back to check his backtrail and gave me just enough time to get the shot off. It was more of a reaction for me I think. It was a pretty intense moment.

Sage: Yeh I completely know where you are coming from. In the intensity of the moment wether it be hunting or something worse. Your training and reactions kick in. Not everyone has the composure and inner person to just not unravel with your situation. All those archery practices and you as a strong person pulled off that shot and that truly is special...

Congrat's on an awesome mulie..

))))------->

sage you waited till the lion killed the buck, then stole it from it, dint you./?good boy thats what i would of done, but i would have killed the lion, and saved that for a later story,. so??????

elkun....youre a goof ball:)."BOWS HONOR" It happened exactly how I said it did. I have heard some crazy stories before too and some hard to believe but you just cant make one up like this.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-25-12 AT 10:04PM (MST)[p]Bonehead, You read correct. my brother in law has three minutes of video of the lion sneaking up on my deer at the same time I was. Its pretty intense.

You mean to tell me that (1) you killed the buck of a lifetime; (2) with a bow; and (3) while intervening in a mountain lion's pursuit of the same buck?

Truly the hunt of many life times. You've been saving your good ju-ju for a while!

Congrats!

Yes Chase, thats how it happend. craziest thing I have ever seen. Needless to say, I hung my bow up for the season after that day. Might be out of luck now:)

Being right there is one thing. The fact that they ran right at me is another. there was 100 different directions they could have ran. I think the buck was too big for the lion(body size)he got away faily easy. I was just standing on the right trail that day. I think it was just meant to be. I am blessed for sure.

I know you aren't going to score him, but I wanna know what all the arm chair scorers think... That is a beast... 220???

It doesn't get any cooler than that congrats. This story really makes me wonder what the kill success rates are for lions killing deer. I heard that they succeed up to 75% of the time for an older experienced lion. And no matter the size of the deer they have the ability to hook the face of the buck and twist the neck breaking it or then grab and then bite the neck. Once they are on they don't let go.

hunter,

from what
i can gather, a mature lion will kill one deer a week on average, sometimes more. thats 52 deer a year. they dont care about antler size, age, sick, strong or weak. they kill to eat and survive.
