I am thinking of purchasing a muledeer landowner tag for 2013. I have only hunted antelope in colorado, but never deer. Can anyone please recommend a good unit for a chance at a 180 class buck? I do hunt with all weapons, but prefer muzzleloader hunting.

Thank you

Lots of very good muzzleloader hunting to be had in Colorado. I like a number of highcountry units, but even some of the units with little to no highcountry offer a great hunt.
The list of units that don't hold some 180 bucks is very small.
If you got some bank, get a unit 54 or 55 muzzleloader tag and scout the heck out of it. You'll find some 180+ bucks.
There are quite a few rugged highcountry units where you could find some great bucks.

Thanks Brian,

The genetics in the Gunnison unit are some of the best, I have heard. Do you think the herds have come back since the die off?
What do you think of units 66 or 67?

I live in Nevada and am used to hunting the high desert, so I would feel at home hunting a unit where I could glass open-country.

Does anyone know where I could purchase a landowner/ voucher tag for CO muledeer?

Thanks!

66 and 67 have some 180 bucks. Good units. Call Dennis. He sponsors the mule deer forum here on the site has been for many years. He can probably find you a voucher.

Yes Dennis will probably have the tag you want. But, I would shop around as he has consistently been $1,000 to 1,500 more than Huntin fool and another tag pimp on the unit we hunt.

I agree that there are few units in CO that don't produce 180" bucks, but like Founder said, you can hunt low, high, or REaLLy high! In their Winter '12 edition, Western Hunter magazine did a good article on Boone & Crockett entries over the last 10 years, and had 6 CO counties that fell in the Top 10 in N. America:

Eagle- 27
La Plata- 18
Montezuma- 17
Garfield- 17
Gunnison- 17
Mesa- 17

I would get an overlay map of the counties and the GMU's, and start looking at the terrain you want, and the pricing you like. As has been said, there are a few brokers that you can use to find tags/pricing and figure out what would work for you.

Thanks you guys

this will help me make a good choice.I do like to hunt either mid range or low in maybe a unit that has some rims aswell as
mesa ridge type country.I am use to hunting the high desert country of my home state NV. Sound like gunnison 66 or 67 would
be a good pic. I am looking at maybe a 3rd season rifle tag choice aswell.I think the muzzy hunt is still my # 1 choice. Please feel free to let me know anymore thoughts.??

Thank you
