Wen't on the Late Cow Elk hunt yesterday. Saw 34 dear. 9 were bucks, does were fat 1/3 had twins. Looked to me like buck doe ratios are improving and dear overall looked good. Of course this is just a quick 1 day sample of one small area but was encouraged.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-13 AT 12:02PM (MST)[p]Utah I'm guessing broker?

I spend a ton of days each winter looking over winter grounds
in Central, S central Ut, observing wildlife numbers.

Mixed bag so far this years , some better , some worse.
The south end of 17a seams to have improved a bit.
And 12/16b/16c (IMO) is looking the best so far...

While 16a (nebo) continues to struggle, looking the worst
I've seen it in 35 years. I know the DWR is planning permit
cuts there on both deer a elk. Hope they do it!
The Nebo needs help.

Yes I was just at the top of Cotton Wood in Nine Mile out of Price. It was the most bucks I have seen over the years most were small spikes and two points. Two average fours and a three that had lost one horn. I was encouraged with the amount of bucks and that several small ones made it through the hunt. Years past I only saw a couple of bucks that were all big. So this was different.

Not Bad considering We are getting Schooled by somebody that can't even spell 'Deer'!

So?
You think you wanna take My Hi- Capacity Magazines & Assault Rifles Huh?
Just Try taking My American Pride/Rights!

It's been a long hard ride
And I won't lose hope
This is still the place
That we all call home

More than likely his auto correct on his phone dosent have a crystal ball to know what he wants to say, and he just not a good proof reader.

Probably So!

It'd be bad if people could spell without auto correct!

It'd be as bad if people could add/subtract/Math without a Calculator also!

Kinda like the Joke about the DWR Counting Deer!

"Yesterday I couldn't even Spell Dear"!

"Today I'm Conting them there Dear"!

What I really get a kick out of is People that are seeing Major changes/Improvements in the Herd and they think it's Due to the New Management already,GEEZUS!

Of course the herd numbers look good right now, we had a mild winter last year. Just wait until May and then see what's left of them. It's looking like we have a hard winter ahead.

For those English studs on here.. Go Dear yurself.. Sorry Deer Yourself

the dear heards are out of control! I got in a big bunch of them practicing my stocking the other day..But the wolfs scared them off.

The deer herd has really bounced back from the bad winter 4 years ago. If we don't have a die off this year the next few years could be awesome!

Cantkill, I'm guessing your talking about the San Juan
general permit side , 14A ?

My cousins that have lived in Blanding their entire life
are saying the 'east' side is hurting as well.

The reason you saw alot of deer in one place is because instead of those 34 deer being spread out over 10 square miles they have been pushed together for the winter.

I disagree, because they were all not herded together they were in small bunches over a 10 mile area. The thing that surprised me was not so much the number of deer but the buck doe ratio, and the amount of small bucks that made it through the many Utah hunts and hunters. Small one day sample in a very small area. I found it encouraging

Very encouraged as I have seen a positive change. Again, It was a one day, very small sample, in a small area,.

Well topgun.... how bout you tell me how it's looking over here from where you're at? Oh wait you are 2,000 miles away....

It amazes me how cynical "crowd mentality" creeps into every thread here, often by those who don't even have a dog in the fight.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-13 AT 02:10PM (MST)[p]Thebroker,, the area I kick around in [south central] seems to be going down for the last couple of years. The winter herd I watch is down in numbers as well as the Buck to Doe ratio this year.

Sorry to say this is the way our society is now days.

Yes and its to bad because this is a really good site. I am sure the originators aren't to impressed with the few that post in the manor they do. It is just like hunting and hunters. The largest population and majority are true outdoors men and women. Then there are the few that make the loudest noise that embarrass themselves with remarks , comments, and attitude and cast a dark shadow over the rest of the true hunting population. The same found here, sadly is found out there.

It would be fun to start a post referencing deer populations, buck doe ratio's by different units and areas simply observed by true out doors-men. Those making simple observations and sharing real information for all of us to enjoy and ponder

let me know how the area looks after this winter. The areas ive been looking at never recouped after the winter in 2010. The buck to doe ratio is in the tank. With the amount of snow we already have and how cold it is and the poor rain fall we had all summer it looks like mother nature will deliver a gut punch to our mule deer.

I will agree with quite a few of the naysayers on this forum when it comes to our mule deer herds and it numbers. Some of these guys have been looking at the deer numbers for 20+ years. Then to have someone post how they think the deer numbers are great after they just made the larger areas into smaller areas. I can see how this post stirred the pot so to speak.

Ya I agree, I should have titled it an observation, versus making a statement. I failed to realize the impact it would have on so many opinions. It will be interesting to observe the herds this spring and summer to see how the winter affects the overall populations. It seems interesting to me that the differences in deer numbers between units is so large. It will take several years and studies to determine if the new areas are making a difference in overall populations. There are so many independent variables that affect the herds, not just hunting.

I would start a deer observation post, but what fun would that be eliminating all the negative opinions by those who will always be discouraged with deer populations regardless of the numbers

Went out today and I can still say there are more deer this year than the past 5-6 years. I'm not speaking for the whole state but numbers are coming back. Ya it's not what it was in the 40's 50's 60's 70's. That's a given!!!

Topgun???

How are they looking from your view???

Yeah this site had taken a nose dive. I think I found this site in 2000 or 2001. Good group of people early on. I made a lot of friends here and learned a lot about hunting. They don't visit this site anymore and posts like this are the reason why. Nothing positive, just cynics and smart azzes and people wanting to know which draw to hunt with no information to trade.
