I've have a little info. on that buck.... He was not hit by a car, coyotes were trying too eat him alive and by the time the CO arrived it was to late he had to put him down....

When I get to my computer I will post the pics. of my boy and the buck in the back of the CO's truck....

It's to bad the yotes got him!!!!!!

Here he is!!!!!

This photo show's the tracks in the snow where the CO had to drive to pick him up...

Nice Buck....

Very interesting. My friend was photographing him feeding, and watch him bed, and was told he was hit. He had to leave but when he returned there was a crowd looking so he left.

Thanks for the info, and sharing the pics. Neat looking buck

I was told by a fellow on youtube that he was taken out by a pack of coyotes and the CO had to put him down. I have video of him from a few weeks ago I just posted. "Early Winter in HD" http://youtu.be/wEtwKjqPjtA

Either way, a sad day for a beautiful monster muley. I'd be curious what his outside spread was without counting his cheaters. I'd say he was 31 - 31 1/2

Cheers,
Pete

My friend was getting pics of him between 11 and 1. He had blood on his back leg, but his tracks were the only ones going out in the field. When he left, his buddy and another guy went and got pics, and walked out there. Then 4 cops with flashing lights. When did the coyotes show up. Doesn't sound right.

I don't have all the facts I wasn't there!!! All I can tell you is what I was told by the CO.
I guess I should keep my nose out of threads like this...

Oh no Tikka, Im glad you chimed in. Your info is important and has added much to this post. I'm also just saying what I was told. I just want to get as much info as I can. Hoping someone that actually saw coyotes can confirm. So far, no one that I know that showed up, saw coyotes, and first report was that there was a lot of blood on the side of the road, indicating a collision, but that wasn't seen either.

Thanks for sharing the pics for sure Tikka. I'm wondering if he wasn't hit by a car and then the CO put him down to keep him from getting tore up by coyotes? I'll check with tvilletk and see where he heard that and show him this thread.

I'd still love to know how wide he is :)

Cheers,
Pete

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-13 AT 03:18PM (MST)[p]so why not just leave the sucker for the coyotes. now the stupid things will just kill another one. sounds like a co officer is looking for a big one for his wall.

SW might be on to something. As crappy as it is for the demise of that big buck, Leave the carcass for the dogs. Take the head and cape, if you don't someone will but leave that carcass. It will at least by some deer another week or so. It definately is a different way to look at things.

1911 dont use that language with me it makes you look unprofessional and guilty at the same time.

Theres no reason he had to take the whole carcass.

No its not the same buck. I have video of the larger buck the next year. The smaller buck was killed the next year and was larger then the big buck in the photo.
The big buck in this photo as far as I know never died to a hunter.

here's a video of that buck

I have first hand knowledge that the deer had been hit by a vehicle on U111. It then wondered off the roadway and bedded down. After being bedded down for a bit it could no longer get up or walk because of its injuries. Salt Lake County responded and put it down. A CO responded and took possession of the animal. There was almost a fist fight between a few bystanders trying to take possession of the deer.

SW,
Whats 1911 guilty of? please share...

Think a little before you type. Was you one of the jackazzes ready to fist fight for the deer? A little butt hurt you wasn't able to mobilize a "mission impossible" and cut the rack off? And one last thing...I'm sorry Tikka unfriended you on Facebook:(

Biker, thanks for the additional info. Thats sounds more like what my friend saw, and didn't know where the coyote story came from, as nobody saw coyotes. Most likely someone claimed coyotes, to enhance their chance of getting the head.

I saw the buck at Custom Taxidermy yesterday! Super cool deer for sure, but believe it or not he only has a 26 7/8" wide main frame and 27 1/4" including the cheaters. The cheaters angle back enough that they don't add much to the width.

On a side note this buck had some big holes eaten away on his right side. Almost like he got into some acid or something out there. Anyone ever seen something like that before?

Cool, thanks for the update. Wicked holes.

Theres logic, and theres women. They don't go together.

Think those holes happen in the velvet,Something must of stuck to his antlers while they was grown, so weird stuff for sure it's a wonder they didn't break during the rut.

Not the slightest idea how it got there. I think the guys name is Rob that brought it in.

Anyone else notice that sweet black wolf in the background there..?? Thing looks amazing...

That's actually going to be a pair of wolves on that pedestal !!! Definitely an awesome mount.

So what is the ultimate destination for a deer killed in this fashion? Does the dwr keep it or the officer that killed it? Who is paying for the taxidermy?

This deer died from injuries stastained from a collision with a vehicle. In cases like this, the dwr takes possession. But when someone claims the deer was killed, or taken down by coyotes, then they can claim the deer and get it. Thats my guess as how it got to the taxi.

thanks yelum. something is not right here, come on dwr, lets here the story about these antlers,,, how many people on here have done the same thing , and never got the antlers, the dwr needs to explain this please,,,,,

The dwr could be mounting it for a display for a hunter education classroom, or for a traveling wildlife trailer.

While people are speculating ill throw a few out. Maybe the officer is having it mounted for his collection. Maybe some one he knows is having it mounted.

One things for sure its kind of bs if someone in the public got those horns. How may people do you someone that turn something in like this and they never see the horns again or they are forced to buy them at auction. There should be a system of set rules in place so the guys who turn in, or find stuff like this where they are allowed to can claim it.

who farted?

I can't speak for any other state, but as explained to me in CO a roadkill can be first claimed by the driver who struck it. If the striking vehicle driver doesn't want it, then first come first serve gets it and our local dispatch maintains a roadkill list for folks in the market. However, if a roadkill animal is considered a trophy (I guess by Sampson standards) then the head is to be turned in to CPW aka DOW. I assume this is to deter any tempting trophy accidents. Unfortunately, CPW/DOW has done nothing to educate local L.E. on the details of this policy and since most or almost all of the car/critter accidents are covered by local L.E. there is an obvious amount of ignorance in the application. As far as the horns go, I would assume that they are either on display at the CPW service center or get donated to certain causes like most of the confiscated meat during hunting season gets donated out. I myself have put down an uncountable number of critters injurred on the roadside. At least one had a great rack that was gone by the next day. To me the rack had no value. I didn't earn it I just executed it to put it out of its misery. If CPW/DPW wants the head then they can come get it as I have other duties to deal with and you know how the public would perceive/interpret/expound on seeing local L.E. cutting off a head to drop off in the CPW yard. I have heard other states differ greatly. I think my buddy in NM said the carcas can be purchased by the driver, but I don't know or care to get quoted on any of this not having done the research or received any formal training.

Thanks for the info chind. Here in UT, the dwr will not spend the money to have this rack mounted. It was brought to the taxi because someone got possession of it. I don't care one way or the other, who got it. Just sad to see it get hit. My buddy was the first on the seen phortographing it, as it feed and bedded for the last time. I would have liked to see him get it if the dwr was gonna permit it, but he wasn't interested in dealing with all the crap.
