Junior Deer Hunts

My son, Canyon, turns 12 in February. I have just started researching junior deer hunts for this upcoming season. I know that I'll be putting him in for the either sex Fort Hunter Liggett hunt in California. I don't think Nevada has any non-res junior hunts available but correct me if I'm wrong. I need to research the AZ junior hunts but if anyone can point me in the right direction as to what units may provide a better hunt than the others, I'd appreciate it. Pm me if you'd like to. This year is primarily about him. I'll take the back seat. We will be heading to Wyoming in mid October so that he can have a crack at Region D deer and antelope with me and my Dad. Thanks in advance.

Hell, it's bigger than anything BESS has killed.

Hi Paul- If I put him in for those hunts he may not get drawn as the tag numbers are so low. I figure he may be able to draw the FHL tag twice if he's lucky. I'd love for him to hunt Anderson Flats or Round Valley but it's too much of a crap shoot. :(

Hey Steve. You're correct about NV. No non-ressie jr. tags. Az does has some good jr. hunts. My boy hunted 18b year before last. We had a good, fun hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-16-13 AT 05:59PM (MST)[p]My daughter was lucky to get J12 when she was 15 (awesome experience). I put my next jr in for Round Valley all 4 years and he never drew a jr big game tag. I'm not sure what to do with my next boy. If I want him to draw a tag I think I better change my strategy.
Wyoming is great for jrs. No special tags, but price is right
NV needs to kick down with some NR jr tags

Colorado Holds out a certain % of youth tags in some cases as well. But no matter what start getting him some PP.

Also for elk in CO, most youth tags are good for regular rifle season and then if unfilled can be used in select late season areas as well. This system is fading out fast as our herd numbers are closer to objectives, but a December cow hunt can be lots of fun.

There are no special LE hunts for youth in Utah, in fact you cannot apply for LE hunts unless you will be 14 by Dec 31st of the year you are applying. They do however reserve a fair amount of General buck tags and Antlerless tags for youth. In addition if a youth draws an any weapon general deer tag they can hunt with a bow during the bow season and a muzzleloader during the muzzleloader season for that area. They also have a draw for a youth early bull hunt in any bull units. That tag is very difficult to draw and it is still in the general units. There is also a draw for a late elk hunt.
