LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-13 AT 09:39PM (MST)[p]Hey everybody new to the site so i figured id better say Hi and how im looking forward to reading up on mule deer hunting. Some of my family members and I are going to be applying for a mule deer hunt in WY this year '13'. None if have been out there for mulie's but have been out 3 years ago chasing goats. As of right now we are going to be applying for rifle in unit E and starting out around the Dubois area. As I said this will be myself, my brother, dads, and cousins first time out there so if you have any tips or info some of you could pass along would definitely be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Everyone is going to jump all over you for spelling mule deer wrong.
Also no one gives tips around here tell you have been posting for a long time!
But the good thing is your not from California you that's a big +1
For you so far.

Call the biologist in the area ( should be on the web site ) and ask him questions, he will be able to tell you all you need to know. Have a map in front of you when you call because he will talk fast and they don't like to spend a lot of time talking to you ( in some cases ) I have had good luck with most biologist, but never called that area in Wy.

Thank you for replying so fast. I figured I would catch some slack on spelling the title wrong. I know how it is being the new outta state guys asking for info on others beautiful hunting grounds. I am on Michigansportsman hunting forum all the time and it was the same where it was hard for you to get any info being the new guy around. We're not trying to steal honey holes or anything like that just trying to get get as much info as we can. I do plan on calling the biologist but am waiting till I can get the group so we can figure out what exactly we're need to know.
Thanks again

RE: New to site and mule deer hunting

The best advice I can give you is get a GPS. Buy good hunting GPS maps taht show boundry lines, etc.

Take a weekend or two and drive to the area you are looking to hunt and find a few more places. There is no good substitute for boots on the ground...mixed with a little technology.

And I like to messpell wurds on porpus just two piss off the enlish teachers taht apparently hang out on this site! (myself included LOL)

Good luck. Unit E has a few good bucks!

Try to hunt the same spots year after year, scouting is great, but after the first shots, its out the window. I have found I learn more during the hunts than outside of them. I don't hunt wyoming, so I don't have tips. Probably should get that Obama sticker off the bumper, Wyoming was next to Utah in Anti Obamanism.

RE: New to site and mule deer hunting

Yeah, it might be tough to do much in scouting trips from Michigan.

Once i have determined a general area thru contacts, here, the phone, the Internet,.. make as many as you can, use Google Earth to narrow down places to check out right before the season starts. Showing up a few days before the season with a plan is a good way to go but get as much local knowledge as you can before you leave home.

Also hunting later in the season, after the crowds have left, is not a bad way to go!

Wyoming people are some of, if not, the nicest in this Country. I have found that they'll usually go out of their way to help you if they can.

RE: New to site and mule deer hunting

Hey everybody thanks for all the helpful info. and yes it'll be hard to do a scout trip being that we're from michigan so we're trying to gather as much as we can off the internet. We will have GPS with but was wondering if anybody has used the Hunting GPS Map that you can buy off the Wyoming dnr site? I think we are going to wait till the first weekend to let the crowd calm down a little bit. so if we were to wait how skittish will the deer be and how much harder are they going to be hunt As opposed to being there opening day. I know when we hunted goats in Casper the locals were awesome. My Ol' Man was the last to shoot his and the morning he did we had two different locals offer to take us to private property to make sure he didn't go home empty handed. That's something you will never experience here in Mi. We are pumped and are hoping we draw. Thanks again everybody for the advice and info. Anything else would be greatly appreciated.
