been a few years since i've been up there. i heard the last couple of years the winters have been pretty bad. i'm thinking about putting in for mule deer. we usually hunt around the broaddus area. last time i was there was in 2010, didn't see a lot, but managed to take a respectable buck?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-08-13 AT 05:42PM (MST)[p]I was in broadus last week. There was hardly any snow. It's been a mild winter in MT so far. The deer I see look relaxed and in good shape. There are way too few of them but they are not going to die in snow banks this year.

If you haven't been there in awhile you'll be disappointed in the lack of animals compared to a few years ago.

I say might as well try to go on the hunt. Theres still good deer hunting. I live to the North alittle ways around Miles City. Deer numbers are down, no doubt about it. Wish they where better. Some pockets are better off than others. Deer seem to be looking in good shape the ones Im seeing so far this winter. Not deep snow so far this year. Last November things actually greened up with some moisture and nice weather before things froze up, think that really helped the animals going into the winter months. Verdict is out if we get any harsh storms yet this winter/spring.

its been a couple of years since i've been there. numbers were down then compared to when i hunted last which then was 2007. hope they recover well. im just dreading having to buy that over priced license.

You could always just buy a leftover and go if you don't draw somewhere else. Not like the tags are selling out this year.
We saw lots of younger little bucks last year and quite a few fawns. The drought was so bad that a lot of the locals said the deer moved to find water and decent feed so they were in different places than in the past. We still saw deer but nothing like we did before the bad winter. It was hard work to find a decent 4 point unlike a few years ago where i could turn down a few mature 4x4s everyday.

Still a fun hunt and great country but we need a mild winter and good spring to get things going back in the right direction.

Are they still issuing doe tags in region 7? If so, that's a shameless money grab when the herd is struggling.
