What's everyone's thoughts of the books? What caliber of deer can be expected? My brother that is handicap with ms should draw this year so I was curious if it is still good. Thanks

Been steadily declining for the last few years. A 160 170 class buck would be in the upper average killed down there this year. There are a few bigger than that but it would be pretty difficult to find them.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

The Books can be a great unit if you know it. The biggest mistake with the books is everybody who puts in for a tag because a friend of a friend once saw a good animal there. The mountain is way too big to go in blind with high expectations. There is plenty of easy country if a guy knows when to be where. To anybody considering a tag for any species on this unit I would highly suggest making sure you'll have a lot of time to get to know the area or go with someone who does. I've helped a gentleman with a disability kill a 188" buck and a 194" buck in the last few years. I sent a PM with more info.

140-155 can be expected. You do better then that and your doing better then 95% that hunt it. The quality has really gone down hill over the last several years. If you want a better buck then 140-155 then you need to apply for a unit that averages them san juan would be your ticket. Oak creak, Vernon, Several cwmu's come to mind. The bookcliffs is an easy unit because is a road hunt. Just not a lot of big bucks.

Frankly- I dont think there is a unit with better road hunting potential... There are roads everywhere, and you have just as much chance of seeing a good one from the road, as hiking in to some canyon... IMO

For someone with MS- I think it'd be a perfect hunt. Frankly, I wouldn't be all caught up in needing a 180" buck on a hunt with someone dealing with MS. Any decent buck would fulfill a dream I think.

I've been on the Elk Ridge unit during archery- and it was kinda like a candy store of big bucks, laying close to the road... Aside from archery- I dont know how that one is though.
