Henry's Advise

Ok. Here is the question. How is the Henry's Muzzy hunt compared to the rifle hunt?? I am getting an itchy trigger finger. I have studied the draw stats and am in the bonus pool for muzzy, but could be waiting up to another 5 years for the rifle. I like the idea of the fewer tags that go along with the muzzy hunt, but also like the idea of being able to shoot a lot farther with the rifle. (Especially on that steep/open mountain range). Anybody have any pros or cons to either hunt?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.. Again, I know this is a very good problem to have, but after all these years of putting in, I want to hunt..

So, looking at last year's odds, there were 10 guys with 16 points, 4 of them drew Bonus Tags... Leaving 6 of them that moved up to 17 points this year... So the only guys in the Bonus Tag Pool this year are those 6 guys (assuming they stick with the same tag applicaiton).

But it looks to me like there were 30 guys with 16 points for the rifle hunt, 8 of them drew, leaving 22 guys with 17 points for this year's draw. But there are 11 tags.

So if you have 17 points, it looks like you would have a 4/7 (57%)shot at a bonus tag for Muzzy or an 11/23 (48%) shot at a rifle tag... Maybe I am missing something looking at the draw data..??

I think I'd take the 48% chance at having a high powered rifle in my hand for the hunt of a lifetime...

If you don't have 17 points, you are not in either bonus tag pool...

who farted?

Browning, you are correct. I misread the odds. I am going into this years draw with 16 pts. Looks like I could be waiting a few more years. I think I am leaning towards the muzzy hunt though. Seems like there are a lot less players in that game.. I would still like to hear any pros or cons to either hunt if anyone is willing to share any insight or experience.. Thanks again!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-13 AT 09:50AM (MST)[p]I personally would try for the muzzleloader tag. In MY opion it is tougher to get close and kill a great buck. We all know mule deer are smart and getting close to big deer let alone killing them is a challenge. I love a challenge. I am an archer but if I was not I would try for the muzzy hunt. Each year I go down to the Henrys shed hunting and meet someone who finds a 200+ " set. Big bucks will make it through each season.Good luck, I hope you draw! The sooner the better.

I guess it would depend on what you prefer to hunt with. If you have never hunted with a muzzleloader then that might not be a good option. I personally feel that you get what you put in the effort for. There is no reason that you can't kill a big buck with the muzzy down there. You aren't going to step off the road and shoot one so if you are willing to put in the effort and have the patience to do it, then do the muzzy. Shot distance means nothing if you can sneak within 50 yards of them anyway. It may be more difficult but even more rewarding than a buck taken at 500 yards with a rifle. I am a huge muzzy fan and although I have blown more stalks than made kills, I always have a great time. Just my 2 cents. I hope you draw in whatever way you put in for!

Alot of the bigger bucks on the henerys are being killed with bows I heard of one guy who had a rifle tag and had 6 shooter bucks found and by the time the rifle hunt started all 6 had been killed so he turned his tag back
