Unit #53 Colorado Deer

A few questions as I have applied for muzzleloader deer in unit 53.

1. I am hoping it was a good move to risk 4 non-resident points with a quality pack type hunt in mind.

2. Are my expectations of a 170-180 class realistic with a little hard work?

3. Any chances of finding them in the velvet up high with those mid September dates? (love my velvet muleys)

Any info would be great. Thanks

170-180 class deer live there, you will have to back pack to find them. Rough, big country but one of my favorite places. Never been there during that time so don't know about the velvet.

uintahboy I think the velvet will be off by then, hope you also love hard horns. Can I ask why you chose 53

I hunted 53 last September for archery. It was hard.

The country is steep, the canyons are wide, and the bucks are sparse. I packed in for 5 days on one stint and then another 5 days towards the end of the month. The bucks were in avalanche chutes acting like billy goats for the entire month. I made a total of 4 stalks. The bucks ranged from 160 to low 180.

Good luck.

The high country there is big and brutal. Would be tuff to get within smoke pole range....haven't looked at success rates in that unit for muzzy but can't imagine they are good....

Infoman, I had the opportunity to first visit that country several years ago when my father-in-law was working for the Bowie mine building new roads in that thick oak brush country. I saw several respectable bucks down low and have been interested in hunting the unit. Then last spring I traveled near Hotchkiss to buy a mini-truck, I looked over those wicked mountains and thought I better do it now while I am young.

Thanks for the info.
