Looking at drawing early rifle unit #74 in CO next year.

Any thoughts or concerns why or why not?

Thank You for any and all comments.

That seems to be the highest demand early rifle hunt. The success rates are usually low on those hunts. You would need to be in top condition and have plenty of time to locate a shooter.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-17-13 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]Put in for the archery deer hunt. If i draw its beast mode for 4 months to get in shape for 13k ft of extreme terrain. Bring it!

Ahhhhh...I see u now! :)
Maybe if u draw that tag and hit it hard for four months...you should hammer on me to get in shape too.

4 months of "beasting" it may not be enough. Even so 13,000 feet will just about kill anyone no matter how "beastly" they are. Ask the few handful of us who have "actually" hunted at 13k and we will all tell you its a near death experience. Good luck at 13k!

CO Ram - If I'm going to have a near death experience what better a place than southern co above timberline. I'm not boasting about abilities rather looking toward to the opportunity to have my ass kicked by the mountain. In the end, the mountain tames all and takes no prisoners. If I can increase my odds the slightest by getting into the best physical shape possible leading up to the hunt, that's my mindset. It's bowhunting and as much as I want to be successful, the odds are in favor of the mule deer giants.

I have hunted at 13k ft in CO for the elusive Muley. I have also been fortunate enough to haul out a big one. It's a dang tough hunt, however you don't have to be an ironman to do it. I'm in good shape but not excellent shape. The key ingredient is take it slow. It aint a dang race. Pace yourself and be mentally tough. Take horses if you got them, and a freind who will tend them while your out hunting.Horses can, in every timberline area I have hunted, put you into core hunting areas. You'll still need to hike, but at least you won't empty the tank on your way in.I'd also look at drop camps.Good Luck. These hunts can be the most rewarding hunts anywhere.

Every step becomes harder and harder, one day i was chaseing this big bull around on this avalance shoot with a friend from iowa, and out of know where we were both just sitting there laughing at each other for no reason except the lack of oxegyn.
