Lucky me drew the muzzy hunt at the end of September! Although I will be with an outfitter, just wanted to know what to expect in that unit. I've hunted several other units in the southwestern part of NM, but just wanted some basic info.

Pretty sure he meant that he has been to the southwest portion of the state, but never to 2B...that's how I read it anyway.

I think an outfitter that will scout would be worth a lot on this hunt, probably more so than on most hunts, it actually could be critical to success. You will be hunting only resident deer (2B is known for its migratory bucks from Colorado, but they won't be there then) and they might not move much during the day depending on the weather (hot and clear and they might not move much). Cooler and cloudy and they will most likely be moving and feeding later in the mornings.

Best of luck and feel free to PM me.

LAST EDITED ON May-02-13 AT 07:19AM (MST)[p]Sorry that I "confused" you! Guess I should've said that 2B would be my first hunt in the NORTH!

I've hunted 15, the 16's, 17, 23, and 34!

Tks for the tips about times to hunt. Late September could be anyone's guess what the weather will be. Hoping that it will be cooler and get more movement maybe!

Hot and dry, Hunt the waterholes if they have water in them.
Talk to the oilfield workers they JUST might give some good intel on where they are seeing the bucks at that time, good Jerky/cold drinks will help break the ice.
Carry lots of gas and a couple of spare tires.
Boat the lake and glass the shore if the waterholes are dry.
I know a few guys that have ridden Mtn bikes on the closed roads and it seems to work for them to get back where there is less hunters.Good luck

I have never hunted the muzzle loader hunt in 2B but had the early rifle deer hunt in 2011. I scouted the Laguna Seca Mesa area south of Hwy 64 and saw lots of does and small bucks. The weather during the third weekend in October was mild to warm. I was there for the entire week before opening day and saw most of the deer near water and on the graded, grassy areas near the gas wells. Unfortunately, two days before opening day, I rode a mountain bicycle three miles down a closed gas line road, by myself, and fell off breaking my right arm/elbow into fifteen pieces. The SPOT GPS locater device really works. After walking three miles back to the main forest service road, and an ambulance ride to Farmington my hunt was over before it started. Mountain bicycles should be banned and outlawed. In the wrong hands, they are more dangerous than firearms. Good luck on your hunt.... and be careful.

I went with a friend that drew the late tag a few years ago and one of the better bucks I saw was feeding on one of them pads also,Motor running and pumping water and everything I walked right up to 30 yards of the buck hiding behind the pump and took pics of it.

I've got a 3X9-50 Pentax Gameseeker on top of my Knight rifle and is sighted for 200 yards!

I like the tip about the water holes; I will have a guide the first two days, hopefully I'll tag out! The rest of the time will be DIY, so will need to grab a BLM map!
