so i plan on doing some rattling in an area where whitetail and muleys ranges overlap. never really heard of anybody rattling in mule deer tho. anybody here do it? if so, would you say its as effective on mule deer as it is on whiteys?

My son's friend on his first mule deer hunt with us tried rattling horns a few times because that is the method he used back home in Texas. All it did was spook the mule deer and make them aware something unusual was going on in the area.

The rattling did not seem to interest the mule deer.

I have rattled in mule deer while hunting whities. They were all very young bucks but they were mulies. Never got any big ones to even seem interested.

I have watched young bucks and does come into a sparring match of a couple other young bucks. It was early Oct. and before the rifle hunt started. I tried it once up in Idaho, during the muzzle hunt with no success. I have read where it works, but not as well as for mule deer. I always thought, given the right timing, it should work.

I've rattled and grunted in lots of mule deer. May not be a tactic that is used as much as with whitetails but it does work. They come in with hair raised and ears back looking for a scrap just like a whitey. Needs to be done at the right time or it won't be effective just like whitetails as well.

To add to that, I have called in MD Bucks, by doe bleating, not too much but at just the right time it works well, killed my last two muleys by bleating.I have had them come from as far as 110yds or so, and sent the arrow thru the ribs at 18yds.
