Well after finding out that I had finally drawn my Bookcliffs tag the plans for the hunt started right away. I've hunted the the Bookcliffs before but have never made it into the roadless area. So my plan was too hunt there for the opener. I made a scouting trip into the roadless with a good friend that knows the area very well. We saw close too 100 bucks that weekend. Well plans were set and me and my good friend left town Friday August 16th. We made it too the trailhead at 11:00 that morning. After 5 miles on Mt. Bikes and another 4 miles on foot we made it too where I wanted too camp. That night we walked too the nearest ridge too glass from and had very little luck in turning up anything. We did see one shooter about 5 miles further down the canyon. We decided where we needed too be for the morning and headed for camp. On our way back there was a fresh lion track on top of our boot tracks. Made the night just a little uneasy. Anyway morning finally came and we had about a mile too cover too get to our glossing spot. We glass every square inch of three different canyons and only turned up one small buck. I was already getting discouraged so we went back too camp grabbed our gear and headed for higher ground. We made it too different canyon too glass for the night and without any luck at all I made the decision too head out of the roadless and head for lower country. Just a word of advice too anyone that wants too Mt. Bike in somewhere don't do it at night with a 50 lb pack on it really is a bad idea. So we made it too our next destination that morning at 4 am so we were exhausted and pretty much slept the morning away. My luck was about too change cause that night my friend spotted a shooter down in a cedar canyon I had scouted earlier in the year. I made a short stalk and got an arrow in him right at dark. We decided not too push him cause we were unsure of the shot placement. So needless too say I had another sleepless night wondering if I had made a good shot or not. Sunup came slow but it was finally time too go look for my buck. We recovered the arrow and it had very little blood on it so I was worried but my friend was confident I had made an ethical shot. Well 3/4 of a mile and 2 hours later I finally has my hands on my best buck. After a short photo shoot we got the buck caped and quartered and headed for the car. It's hunts like this that last forever. I had on hell of a weekend but it all worked out. Hope you enjoy the story and photos. FYI that is the entrance hole you can see. Yes it is far back but he was quatered away and it made its wat into vitals. Just clearing that up.

Congrats! How do you carry them and walk upside down like that? They always slip out of the pack when i try it!

>do you know what no mechanized
>vehicles means... No mountain bikes
>allowed in roadless area.

That's a stupid law, a herd of elk will tear up the ground more than a mountain bike.

Roadless areas are NOT wilderness areas. I can not find anywhere that specifies that mountain bikes are not allowed. Please enlighten us and show us somewhere that states this

Good looking Buck, Glad to see it worked out for ya.

Sign right as you come to indian gate states mechanized vehicles not motorized...
Back when it became public we were planning on taking bikes. Fish and game was at the gate and asked us what we were doing with bikes and told us bikes were not allowed under the mechanized rule. They would not let us take them in...

Awesome buck there my friend... That cheater makes him just a little unique, and he's got a great frame on him. He'd be a shooter for me for sure as well...

Way to get it done..!! :)
