Wondering if any one had any Info on Unit 78 in Idaho. Usually hunt units 1,45,44,41 when drawn. 78 was 2nd choice. Have another elk tag at same time, so scouting is limited. Thanks for any help.

Deer or Elk? I assume deer since 78 for elk is part of 75.

Unit 78, which is right by my house, got hammered by a major winter-kill a few years ago. I have run 6 cameras the last few years just trying to find some deer and haven't seen a single monster buck in three years.

I used to be able to find 4 or 5 bucks over 180 every year, but it has been really tough lately. This year, I don't have a picture of a deer over 160. Sorry for the bleak news. There are good genetics in there, especially for nontypical bucks, but they also have genetics for weak fronts.

Long story short... there is a reason you drew it as a 2nd choice. See what you can find, but don't plan on passing 4x4's.

PS. Tristate, please be an adult and respect my wishes that you do not respond to any of my posts. I, in turn, will do you the courtesy of not responding to any of yours. I simply do not wish to converse with you.

This one is right by the road, but you can't see him from the road. I am not a road hunter, but in this area, I hunt closer to the road than I ever have.

I'm not one for telling my grandson how big of turd I had to pinch off from having to eat so much meat. I want to give him the antlers that hang from my wall and tell him the unforgettable experience that came with each and every one.

Sorry, Unit 78 tag is for deer. Have talked to a ew biologists in the area, tey all talked about winter kill. But tey did say the genetics were good for non typical deer. Not at all expecting to harvest a monster, but will learn some new country. Hope to help someone else out in the future. Tanks, Bryan.

I assume you meant you drew Unit 78 deer tag in the 2nd drawing, and not "second choice"? There were 728 first choice applicants for 200 total tags, so no one should have received a tag for second choice unless I'm missing something.

Sorry not much help for info on the unit, other than I totally agree with others about the genetics in that part of the state. If a buck grows old enough he can become a true hawg! There was a picture of one floating around that supposedly came out there last year, well over 200 inches.
