That is the one. He has everything and is so symmetrical I can't even comprehend it. I listened to the video without watching it the first time and i had chills the entire time. Then I watched it and all I can say is good luck. I'm really speechless. Wow.

Great looking buck. For being a non-typical he is pretty symmetrical when he turns his head just right. thanks for sharing

Need another lawsuit? Post the picture! Don't be scared!

Although in velvet, it is a VERY nice looking buck. That being said I would definitely wait past the 1st day on a sportsman tag. Pretty sure you can go back up to the Henrys in December and have a decent shot at finding a 240 buck.

That being said there are better than 240 bucks in the state, some probably on general units. My point in all of this is this- it's not extremely unheard of to go to the Henrys and find a buck like in this video, when you have all year and with a sportsman tag, why limit yourself to one day. There's bound to be some 260 + bucks around when your talking the whole state. I would be rut hunting in December.

Ya, why would anyone waste a tag on a dink 240"er.

I think if a couple of the Big Name Outfitters coulda found this Buck First, this Guy woulda still been Huntin!

Puttin a buck like that on the ground with family/friends along would really suck
: ). With a tag like that, there's something to be said about takin the pressure off by taggin out. I'd hate to get down to the wire later on after having spent way more time and money only to wish I'd pulled the trigger earlier.

I'm a "bird in the hand" kind of guy. I'd hammer that thing now and still go out later if time permitted and enjoy the henries rut, knowing that one of the biggest ones is home above the fireplace. I'd be ok with seeing a bigger buck after having shot that beast than not finding one after passing him and having the panic set in.......That would suck.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

I think this is a giant deer. I would shoot this buck in a heartbeat. I don't see 240 inches here. Maybe it is the video quality.

Pass up on a 240 buck ? I don't know of many people could do that in the field . Maybe behind a computer screen.
He did most of his hunting the month before. The first day was the beginning of his hunt with a rifle and the end of his hunt. Check out the ivideowildlife.com for some better pictures of this buck. They have the score with each measurement.

As stated its a heck of a buck but yes with a tag like that, where you can hunt for that long, I wouldn't shoot that buck on the first day. Nobody thinks a 240" bucks a dink, but from my computer and I'm pretty sure the field, I'd pass the first day. I like hunting too much and I don't think most that have made comments on here can seriously understand or comprehend, I know I can't, what it would be like to be one of only a couple people still hunting ANYWHERE in the state in December. My two cents.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahah.............

pass a 240" deer? holy sh!t what has hunting become?

Great video clip. Love the excitement in their voices. Glad they took a buck that made their hearts jump. That's what it is all about.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-13 AT 10:46AM (MST)[p]I got pictures of that buck on the ground and all I can say is that buck is an awesome buck. I was in awe at the size of this toad. The opening day part of the video with all the bucks in the video was awesome. He was the biggest of them all. I think it was a great looking buck. I'd pull the trigger with my family and friends there to watch.

If I ever get to the point of passing up 240" deer some-one slap the crap out of me. PLEASE

That buck has everything I would want in a buck, until I shoot 25 of them or so. I would then look for something else.

Huntinguy,
Please send pics of these 260" buck's!
Zach spend 23+ days on the Henry Mountains this summer during the pre-season and this is by far the biggest buck he found, and fell in love with. Could there be a bigger buck out there? Probably so! Could the story have been any better? No Way! He found this buck with his mom, dad, sister and close friends, fell in love and took the buck of his dreams, so with that being said, I don't get your point?
But please do send me these pictures of the 260"+ mule deer, because I don't believe they are around every corner like you make it sound.
Kelly

Wow, what an awesome buck. Congrats to the hunter. He found the buck that he wanted, and he killed the buck he wanted. That's all that matters. Thanks Kelley, for the footage of his family finding this great buck!! You can clearly see the excitement in everyone when they found this true giant!!

"Huntinguy,
Please send pics of these 260" buck's!"

Don't have any, but that's not to say it wouldn't be fun looking for a year.

"I don't get your point"

You and everyone else! Point was I would love to have the tag in hand spending some time out in Dec looking around. Perhaps even shooting a smaller trophy but still looking all the same.

No doubt the buck is a bruiser and the hunter scored big time. Congrats on the video and hunt.

huntingguy
I understand what you are saying . When I got the text from Zach saying the buck was down ! My next text back was congrats you got your buck. The next line of the text was " bummer now you cant hunt anymore"
Knowing his situation I can understand why he took his dream buck with in the first two hours of his hunt. Like I and Kelly said before he really hunted for this buck on many trips to the Henry's during his preseason scouting. It cost him a lot in gas money and time off work ect. He had to barrow the money from his dad to put in for the tag. He is a starving student working two jobs putting himself threw school. So How many of us would hunt this sportsmans tag, would of course be different then this young man.
I cant wait for the completed video to come out of the whole hunt. There has been a bit of "drama "surrounding this buck. If any of you want to meet for lunch some time to hear the stories. Or just wait for it to come out in print. ;-)

Thanks Big John- I knew someone would eventually catch on to what I mean. Helluva buck but sad to have a tag like that come to an end in ONE day. Understand he scouted the hell out of it and it makes total sense.

Alright, now this is a big step for me figuring out how to create a login to be able to post something Ha.
What an awesome opportunity I had to be of the lucky few to be in possession of a Sportsman tag, let alone the mule deer tag! From the first phone call home I declared this would be an unguided hunt. I wanted to learn how to hunt monster mule deer and wanted the memories that go with it.(I would much rather kill a 210 buck with family and friends, than a 260 buck using a guide. Just more gratifying that way to me, but that's me not anyone else :) ) I also described MY buck of a lifetime during that phone call: A big main-framed buck with some trash, but not so much that the trash distracts from the main-frame. I had been dreaming of killing a buck like that to fulfill MY dreams so it was easy to decide what I wanted. After realizing that trying to video my hunt myself would be harder than I thought, I began trying to figure out who I wanted to video it. After a couple months of watching some of Kelly's videos I decided I would give him the opportunity to film such a hunt and hopefully get his name out there a little more. Plus we decided to bring everyone along with us rather than wait until just before the expo to show the deer we were looking at/harvested.
I managed to save up 6 months worth of rent, truck payment, 1400 dollars for food and gas and 900 dollars for emergency money and also taking the semester off from school. I planned on hunting for a while thinking that it would take me longer than sooner to find the buck of MY dreams. But after 4 scouting trips down and receiving written permission from Reed Stevens to be able to access public property through his private property and road we were able to glass up MY dream buck and I knew I was going to have a lot of money saved up in the bank if everything worked out Ha. I fell in love with this buck 50 percent, knowing this is everything I have ever wanted in a buck and the other 50 percent was how we found him. To be able to find him with my parents, sister and one of my best friends made my hunt a success. The thing I love about my experience is that it is just some good ole' boys ( and mom and sister) putting in the work, having fun and then to culminate everything with MY buck of many lifetimes! I couldn't ask for anything more :)! Some of you probably could ask for more, so when its YOUR tag, I hope you enjoy your experience as much as I did and you kill YOUR buck of a lifetime. And post it please so everyone can admire the majestic beauty of what this great land gives us the opportunity to enjoy.
Me on the other hand, I WILL be hunting all year... Helping family and friends as they did with me hunting, camping and hopefully harvesting not only great animals but also memories that will stay with us forever. Good Luck to everyone in their own pursuit of THEIR trophy of a lifetime!

Welcome to the forum Zach !Nice first post . Thats more then I have written all year . :)
Oh ya just so you know , your suppose hide your real name and lock your profile. ;-) Don't ever say you have ridden a atv or wounded a animal and had to track it. They maybe a few others I have left out like grammar and such . I am sure others will pipe in and help out.

Zach,

You didn't have to justify your choice of buck to anyone, but thanks for the story! Huge buck! When do we get to see a pic of it harvested? Congrats, and welcome aboard!

HAHA I was not trying to justify the deer I took, just trying to explain why it was so easy to kill the first day rather than hunt the rut under a lot of pressure with only a few weekends left to find this caliber of a buck. Now I can go to the henrys his November and find me some big bucks and enjoy it rather than play mind games with myself trying to figure out if I want that one or not. All of the harvest pictures of my buck are on #####.com. Scroll down past the sponsors and look for the 2013 Sportsmans tag tab and there you will find all of my pre season scouting videos and the harvest pictures. Don't be depressed when you see me sitting directly behind the rack of the deer rather than behind his rear end, that just isn't me :) Check it out though!

first of all congrats on your buck, that's an awesome deer. Its a deer of many lifetimes and anybody on this website would have shot him.

I have sat back and watched this forum for a while now and have never posted until today. I wasn't going to even post this but I figured that I might as well and see if I would get any answers from you. I have heard so many rumors around this deer I figured if your right here why don't I just ask you rather then going off of speculation. if you don't want to answer its understandable and I appreciate you coming on this site and putting yourself out there and responding to some of these questions.

I want to ask because from what I have heard going around the salt lake valley is that Russ Draper and Chase Ashcroft guided you around the unit before your season opened and before Russ's hunt started. Where is the credit to them for helping out so much if that rumor is true. Don't they deserve credit? Is that rumor true? because them helping out you should probably be saying it was a semi guided hunt instead of a DIY.

It always happens when a big deer or elk is killed but what's the rumor about blocking roads?

In one of the post's above it mentioned how many days you scouted the henry's. Did you scout any other units in the state
or contact any CWMU to try to gain access?

Any ways Congrats again on your deer.

Joey

Joey I appreciate the questions and giving me the opportunity to answer. Chase Ashcroft has become a great friend and he was a great help on my hunt. He is the cousin of a next door neighbor in my hometown of Tooele. My neighbor told me that if I was planning on doing it unguided I should contact Chase because he goes down to the Henry mountains because he loves finding big bucks and does it for the love not as a guide for fame and money. I said many times joking around with Chase that he was my "guide" and he would shoot that down so fast haha. He also told me from the beginning his obligation was to Russ since Russ had an archery tag, but he was willing to show me around the Henry's and some good spots to glass. He was awesome and up front about everything. He would be the first one to tell you he did not "guide" me at all, he was just a friend helping out another friend. I think this happens a lot with people who draw a coveted tag where down the line they find somebody willing to show them around the unit at no charge because they love hunting for the right reasons and not the business side. Chase was unfortunately not there when my family and I located my buck or harvested my buck. Thats why I just mentioned "family and friends" and no names because the way it all played out Chase was not present for the events that I previosly explained in my previous post. Russ opted to not go around with me during pre season scouting since he had his own tag, which I understood completely. He told me that once his hunt was over if I would like his help, he would be more than willing to help out. Unfortunately, I shot my buck before his hunt was over. As far as credit goes Chase deserves alot trust me, but if i were to begin naming names then I would have a huge list just as any "Do It Yourself" hunt would have many family and friends that joined in and helped harvest an animal. As far as the rumors go that I was blocking roads, it should be understood that I was on the private property that required written permission, which I had. Since it was private property once arriving we stopped just past Reed Stevens cabin to wait for glassing light in order to try to find my deer. We had three side by sides, two pulled off the road and the third that was pretty much in the road no lie. We thought we were good however because we were on private property and the owner had told me he had not given permission to anyone else so we thought we had the road to ourselves to be honest. Russ pulled up about an hour after we had arrived and he was very respectful and cordial as I asked how his hunt was going and began explaining how it was private property and required written permission. He explained how he was under a different understanding and I offered him the contact information for Reed. He didnt accept and after sometime of talking hunting he and his two friends whom I had never seen before so I dont know their names, turned around and wished me good luck. Not once did he ask if he could get by. I didnt just park and leave like what happens in a lot of these "blocking the road" stories. I did everything necessary to find out what was private and what was not. I knew the boundary of where Reed's prpoerty butts up to Steve Dalton's personal property to which I had no permission, but I never once needed to be tempted to cross his property as I never once saw my buck on his property, just on public property just beyond Reed's property. HaHa I am going to have carpal tunnel but I hope this answers your questions. If not maybe a phone call would be better :)

Zach, great job on fulfilling a dream. You did everything your way and to be completely honest with you if I were you I wouldn't get caught up in this "Drama circle". Let those say what they may and to each their own. It's pretty funny how I live in the salt lake valley too, and I haven't heard crap about your story or hunt. I am 38 years old, own a business, have 4 kids and my own tags to fill this year and my own dreams. My life is busy, and occasionally I get on here and see what is going on. Personally I can't stand the culture that has been created surrounding these high profile trophies, everyone talk'in. So many times the bull crap about what someone said someone did clouds the story of what really happened. I think this website is fun to hear these stories and it turns me off when guys hijack a post and bring drama into it. To those who do this go get a job, have a family, and mind your own freaking business!
