So we found this Lion Kill yesterday. I am not a scorer so for you expert scorers what would this one go 160? He is 24" wide.

Side view.

Warning antlers get distorted in photos and may appear larger than actual size.

He looks like a 170 class buck.
He is bigger then the one you are packing.

That would be sweet to have two good bucks to be used in your mounts. What kind of mount are you planning.

Here is the one we shot. I say we because I jumped him out of his bed and then shot at him quartering away and hit him square up the butt. He stopped broadside for about one solid minute to give my brother a shot with his new muzzleloader and it misfired flame shooting out the end but no bang! As we sat and reloaded for another 5 minutes the buck slowly walked down the hill and right into my buddy Jason who put one through the front shoulder and put him down. Congratulations to Jason! good times on the mountain.

The Lion Kill had the hind quarters wrapped around a quakie and was completely cleaned by coyotes birds and whatever else. No arrow on the site either. I archery hunted this area and did not see one single other hunter. We could start seeing some older age class bucks in this area if the lions were thinned down a little bit.

I thought it was a big No No in Utah to pack out dead heads? Or have they changed that? You are hunting Utah right?

We were thinking that it is ok to take it if it is tagged since my bro. was not going to be able to go out hunting again. We were thinking Euro on the dead head but we found that the taxis don't want to deal with the wrotten heads. I don't blame them. Plus not much money in it for them.

Nice buck harvested, nice find on the other one...

BUT, certainly appears NOT to be a lion kill.

1st, lions bury thier kills, never leave them in the open.

2nd)lions will tend to crush bones. especaily rib cage bones.
And , a lion would never leave a carcuss over a tree like that..

Jusy say'in....

these guys would say it was killed by ufo s before it was a lion,,,,hell who knows, lion is as good a bet as any.

What goofyelk is saying makes sense to me and experience is a great teacher I believe his assessment. Hard to say what killed the buck at this stage. Nice find an a good buck.

Here is a photo of a lion killed buck just for reference.....the young tom lion drug the buck 400 yards into the brush and buried it under a pine tree.

BTW huntersrwg, congrats on your deer and find.

RE: Lion Kill Dead Head Scolain to seere?

goofy,,, and I guess bears
and coyotes never drag those dead deer away from the kill site, yep you know it all.,,.,you should wright a book,,,,i don't know if that deer was killed by a lion.' but the odds are it was, enuf said,,,,,

RE: Lion Kill Dead Head Scolain to seere?

OK---A few more important thoughts...(assuming this is in Utah).

1) Kevin D--- Know that's a lion kill!

2) The 'found buck is 'hard horned ', dead about a month.
Very, very likely arrowed during archery season and lost.
OR now the possibility of illegal doings has opened up...

3) There are laws conerning these matters.
Below is copied from page 39 of the 2013 Utah feild reg's.

Isn't about time somebody says its a fake Reproduction. And they took pictures in the field to make it look real like a big non typical a few years back??? ;-)

The buck probably was killed by a lion then picked clean by the coyotes and birds. Coyote could have drug the hind quarters over the tree who knows. He said they used one of their tags on the dead head so I really don't see what the big deal is.

If you look at the kill sight from an objective point of view there is no evidence that it was either killed by a lion or that it was drug to it's current location by a coyote. The amount of hair surrounding the skeletal remains indicates to me that it was consumed there by scavengers.....not drug there at a later date when the carcass was more manageable for a coyote to drag.

It's all speculation of course, but judging from the photo of the carcass, my own conclusion is that the deer most likely died of disease, malnutrition, or an injury rather than predation from a lion. I know it doesn't fit the theory that many of you out there want to believe, but I gotta call it as I see it.

died of disease malnutrition or an injury, now you want us to believe that deer starved to death, in aug?, nice rack for a sick deer to grow' that leaves injury. what causes injury???
