Heading to the Book Cliffs

Finishing up preparing food and packing, plan on heading up Wednesday to set up camp and get a couple more days scouting in before the season starts. Getting pretty excited! Any last minute advice/info before I head out?

Dont pass up the 1st day, that you would shoot the last day. We just did that in Nevada. Passed on a GIANT 25+ inch 2x2 that was tall and heavy, big body, old buck and a few 22" willow horned 4x4's on day 1. Each day they got smaller and fewer until day 5 we shot the next buck we saw which was a med sized 2x2 with eye guards. Good luck!!!

Robiland, that works for a lot of guys out there but so does this, "if you ever want to kill a monster buck, you can't go shooting the first nice one that comes along."

I've gone home empty several times smiling because though tempted by large quantities of nice but lesser bucks, i held out for Mr Big and didn't compromise what i had set out to do.

It's one of those "to each their own" deals, neither hunter is in the wrong.

Advice?, if you have a variable powered scope, put it on 5-6 power and leave it there. I'd wager thousands of bucks each year are still roaming because of guys fumbling around, messing with their scope at the most critical time when they already should have had their Buck on the dirt!

I have done most of my scouting and have most of my info for the north. Plan on using one of the days before the season starts to look down south. I'll go wherever I see the best quality.

In the books, particularly in the north, don't be in a hurry! The bigger bucks will move in later in the hunt. Especially if you are lucky enough to get some weather. However!!!! don't pass up a smoker any day!

My honest opinion of the Books is this:

If you are lucky, you won't see a solid buck until day 7 or so... Why..?? Because spending 7 days out there 2 years ago was some of the most fun I've ever had with my dad. If you see a 170" buck on day one, and you shoot it, it's time to go home... So, that's why its lucky to not see a solid buck for a week. Seeing a 170" buck on day 8, to me, would be ideal.

That being said... If I was hunting there this year (and I really wish I was), I'd shoot a 170" buck the first day. But I'd try and stick around out there if I could for at least a few more days. It's just nice to be out in the hills in the crisp fall air.

Good luck to you. I hope you get a dandy. Take chains.

Last week about 10 miles from the divide(PR springs). Have a good time. It's dried out a lot the last few days. BacDoc

Thanks for the advice/ info from all. I'm heading out in the morning, plan to hunt as long as it takes to find the right one. It will have to be a pretty good one to shoot early.

I'll report back on this thread when I can, tough to get a signal up there.

Adam...is Sasquatch going with you? Good luck and hope the big shows up for you.

Thanks! No, he moved back to VA. Unfortunately, I'll be without my hunting partner this year. I am heading back to the same unit in WY to catch the tail end of that antelope hunt after this one. Are you going to be there this year?

Adam...We were there in WY last month but down out of Pinedale for Lopes...filled tags in first 2 days and then headed back home.
We are leaving this month, the 30th for COLO for deer and then back to Ely, NV as I drew an Elk tag there in mid-Nov.

Good luck back up there in WY. We will probably go back up somewhere there next year.

Hunt off Attachee Ridge road. Go into those deep canyons, and glass. The deer I have seen are moving lower. The biggest buck I seen was off the main road hiking 50 yards to the top looking down in the canyon. Sorry for the late response.

Rick,

Go to the Elk Forum and scroll down about 2/3's of the main page and look for the Title of my hunt in NV.
It is "An Old Bull for an Old Hunter".
