LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-13 AT 06:19PM (MST)[p]So I just got back from my NV 241 hunt. Having drawn that dang late AZ elk tag I did not want to draw 231 archery that I had been putting in for forever. I had 11 points so it could have happened. So instead I put in for 221 late and 241. Figured if I drew I would make it happen. Well I did pull 241. Being a full time guide With my schedule pretty much already set, I knew my scouting time would be limited. So I decided to hire a guide... Which I figured would be a little weird. It was, but In the end so glad I did. I doubt I would have gotten even close to the deer I did. Or one at all.
Anyway, real long story short. It rained 2 weeks before the hunt which scattered what few deer there were around and scouted out. Phil Trousdale, my guide, had found 3 bucks that were 190+ and they were no where to be found the first 2 days we looked for them. We saw 3 does and 2 very small bucks. That country is so desolate. Phil is a great hunter. We never saw camp during the day. Hiked and glassed for hours, I loved it. But man not seeing many deer was mentally draining. We found a few in a new spot, but nothing of any size, but I found a shed.
So things were looking up. Lots of fires out there. Hardly a tree.
Went to a new spot. We split up and I saw 4 small bucks and Phill saw 2, including a good sized 4-point still in the velvet. Could not find him that night so we went back in the morning.
It was blowing like mad. 15mph plus. After glossing an hour we move to start looking in some small draws knowing if a deer was around it would be down in them. After about 10 minutes Phil says he sees a deer. I look over and notice he is looking right below is. That irritated me because I had just looked there. He then says it's a buck and it has a cheater. I take one look and tell him I was going to take it. I knew it wasn't that big, but the cheater I saw was actually a pretty good hook cheater, and I have never shot anything like that. But he didn't look that wide. But it was day 5 and we had not seen much, so my standards were dropping.
We snuck around and by the time we got there he had bedded against a rock across the draw. A whopping 198 yards. Good thing I spent all that time at the range shooting long. He did not look very wide, even Phil agreed but I still decided to take him. At the shot he staggered down the hill a bit, I folded him on the second. It wasn't needed but instincts just took over. Had a really good rest.
He was across the hill under those rocks. He is dead over there but you can't see him very well.
He ended up being way better than either of us figured. We did not think he had eyeguards, but he did, his ears were nearly 27" so that made him look narrower. And he had some serious mass. Lots of little extra stuff. Always really cool to have them grow when you get up there. We had thought he had busted a main beam, but it is just shorter and hooks down and forks some. Just really a cool looking buck.
Just a real gnarley buck
He had a huge acorn on his hook cheater, and another on his left G3' really cool
The pack out was a ways, about 2 miles, but not that bad.
My guide, Phil Trousdale. Awesome dude, thank man!
In the end he was almost 28" on his main frame and 30 1/2" to the cheater. Scored out at just about 193"
Had a great time, felt very lucky to get such a deer. Am way happy with him.
