I said best, not biggest, this is actually my smallest buck and first with a centerfire. This is however, the first buck I've taken while my boys and wife were with me. Their excitement made this more fun than any other buck I have ever taken. I seem to kill a deer once every five years or so, even on the dedicated hunter program. This little guy will provide some great meat over the winter and a lot of fun memories for my boys were created today. First thing in the morning we did it two mile hike on a road nobody had been on yet in about a foot of snow. We actually jumped a couple bigger bucks, but I missed a shot. Later we did another hike and after that one the boys were plain worn out. We decided to drive the roads in the unit and show them some areas they had never been to before. As we were driving around at 3 I spotted this buck about 100 yards off the road and asked them if they thought we should take him. Their excitement was obvious and I decided to go ahead and shoot the deer. So yes, my best deer is a spike by two shot 100 yards from the road on the opener. My wonderful wife took video throughout the day and filmed the shot as well. I hope I can have this same excitement with them every year from now on, although I hope we can get it done with some bigger deer :)

A good experience is only all the better for sharing it with family. I regret passing up on some little bucks in the past when my son was with me. Wish I'd taken one or two with him, rather that bigger bucks alone...

good for you, that's what hunting is about,,,,not what they score,,,,, memories like that will be priceless in 20 years,

HA HA! Nice post - great job Andy. Good to see you back on here. PM sent.

That reminds me of my buck last year, one by two also. My son hunted both days with me, and on Sunday at about 6 pm I couldn't let him go without getting a deer as he only had that one weekend to hunt with me. Needless to say, the huge 4x4 I missed on the opener, didn't mean much to him. He thought that one by two was a boomer. Out of all my deer I view that little guy as my biggest trophy, because he was there and watched me take it.

This is a great post in my opinion. I dream about "monster muleys" all the time, but I come to this site just as much for the stories like yours. I grew up in a family of "meat hunters" or "just out to have a great hunt" hunters. Heck, I'm now 67 years old, and at one point in my life , I tagged out on forkies for about 8 straight seasons, hence one of my "handles" is Forky Pete. And some of my best hunting memories are hunts like yours! Thanks for sharing!

Congrats on your success and a great hunt with your boys. Anytime you take them hunting they'll have great memories and this certainly sounds like a memorable one for all of you.

Good job man! Long time no see! This buck will be at the top of your list over any other! I know the dinky 2 point I shot with Kole and Weston there is my best buck, and will never be topped!

They'll get to an age where they'll wanna prove to you they can do it without your help, and We all know they'll be able to prove their point, makes a Guy Proud, but also Hurts not having them right there with you!

Nice Job Boys!

I used to know of places worth Hiking in to for Elk & Deer!
Thanks to Illegal Bastards & the USFS not enforcing Rules you can Zing in to them Places on Wheelers now & not see a Damn thing!
But by GAWD it don't take long for them U-Tards to get there with all the Unethical BS and the New Technology!

Andyman,

As cliche as this sounds... "that's what it's all about!" I thank you for posting your experience. The reason being is because I can relate almost to a T based on my own experience this year. I had my oldest son with me, and we just hadn't seen much in the way of bucks/opportunity. Sunday evening, we see a spike not too far from camp which elates him. I'm able to "one and done" him and he's way more excited than I ever thought possible! Easy drag back in the dark, and memories were made that will be cherished forever.

The most worthwhile part... when he tells me multiple times over the next day before we head for home... "Thanks for bringing me deer hunting dad... I had a lot of fun."

Nice job Dad! Way to sacrifice horn for happiness! Those boys don't give a crap how big the rack is. All they know is that Dad's a hunting hero in their eyes!

It's always an adventure!!!

That's awesome man.... Thanks for sharing your success with us. I have memories from 20 plus years ago thanks to my old man doing what ya'll just got done doing this past weekend, and they are by far some of my fondest memories....

I had taken my oldest boy hunting with me for several years when he was young. After 3 or 4 days I would take him home then go back out hunting and usually end up killing a deer. One day he asked how come you never get a deer when I'm with you am I bad luck? Then and there I decided the next year to shoot any buck we saw if he was with me. We found a small 4 point on opening morning the next year and I shot it. Let him follow the blood and help find the deer still one of my best hunts ever. Great job thats what its all about.
